4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent reference, 1 Nov 2001
By A Customer
Robert benedetto builds beautiful guitars, and now you can copy him! super technical details, such as how thick the sides should be, how to get the correct neck angles, how to camber the fingerboard, etc, without ever getting bogged down with too-technical details such as mathmatical breakdowns of the frequency response for a given width of body(!!).
Useful photos and drawings of tools and jigs are included, and are suitable for one-offs or mass production.
He never loses sight of the joy and art in creating a musical instrument.
Plans are included, but will require some thought from the reader to apply dimensions - this to me, is the way it should be.
A small section gives useful hints to aspiring luthiers in terms of running a business, quite general, and I would imagine anyone intending going that route would have thought of that anyway.
My only gripe with the book is the 50 plus pages (around 25% of the book!) of pictures of the benedetto team at various functions and trade shows, lists of original buyers, product endorsers, etc, none of which make a better guitar, but do increase the cost of the book. People not interested in building may well find that section interesting though.
I found the pictures of the guitar range inspiring though.
A beautifully presented book, a must if you are interested in archtops, even if you don't intend to build one; just a little expensive for the guitar maker, due to superfluous information.

5.0 out of 5 stars great book, 12 April 1999
By A Customer
I almost didn't get the book because of the last review by the man who felt the book should have taught him how to tap tune a top. I am affraid in this generation we expect to get it all from books where once we could only learn by sitting at the masters feet. So far I have found alot of help in this book and I recommend it to anyone interested in learning to make a guitar

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a critical book for an archtop buyer, too!, 22 Jul 1999
By A Customer
As an archtop owner and player for nearly thirty years, I would call this book a must read for anyone who is interested in purchasing a vintage archtop or buying a new one. Benedetto leads the reader into a deep appreciation of the painstaking detail that goes into The Making of an Archtop. He describes the level of attention that should be evident on each component of the guitar, and how it effects the player (and the price) in the end. The significance of learning the process of material selection, construction sequencing and design considerations might well lead the reader towards a custom made instrument. This book is a credit to all the independent luthiers out there whose trade is no longer a secret.
