Product Description

Product Description
What Alvin Toffler's "Future Shock" was to the 20th century, "Our Molecular Future" will be to the 21st century. What will happen to our jobs, health care, and investments when the molecular revolution hits? How might artificial intelligence transform our lives? How can molecular technologies help us cope with climate changes, earthquakes, and other extreme natural threats? "Our Molecular Future" explores some intriguing possibilities that answer these questions and many others. Douglas Mulhall describes the exponential changes that are about to be wrought by the nanotechnology and robotic revolutions, which promise to reduce the scale of computing to the nanometre, a billionth of a meter, while increasing computing power to almost unimaginable levels. The resulting convergence of genetics, robotics, and artificial intelligence may give us hitherto undreamed-of capacities to transform our environment and ourselves.

4.0 out of 5 stars nanotechnology and catastrophism, a race for our future, 5 Jan 2003
A book of three parts, the first and the most interesting for me, is a review of the benefits that atomic level engineering could bring us. This is an exciting read as new technologies predicted in the short and long term cannot help but make your head buzz with optimism and excitement.

The second part comes as a bit of a downer and deals with the multitude of natural catastophes which threaten the earth and our species. The author deals mainly with the repercussion of major earthquakes, volcanos, tsunamis and the inevitable killer asteroids. The author explains how nanotechnology could help us to prevent or survive such disasters.

The third part of the book sets out the action we need to take to bring about the move into the nano-era.

I generally can't get enough of wild speculation about our future and in parts this book is a great jaw-dropper as the author sets out his well researched vision of how future technology might shape our world. The section about natural disasters is well written and interesting, but seems to be a slightly arbitary angle to the book.

Overall though, I would strongly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in this field of technology.
