"An excellent treatise on the current status of chiropractic." - L A Chotkowski, M.D., Amazon.com reader review

Product Description

While chiropractic can provide quality treatment for certain types of back and neck pains and related problems, many health-industry professionals and patients are under the impression that the practice can be used as a method for restoring and maintaining overall health. "Inside Chiropractic" is a clearly presented, practical guide that explores the facts and falsehoods of chiropractic from the view of a doctor with more than forty years of experience in the field-a noted authority on the safe use of chiropractic to treat physical pain. Dr Samuel Homola unleashes a startling critique of the well-established belief that chiropractic can treat infection and disease. Citing the shaky opinions and anecdotal evidence that support chiropractic treatments for a wide range of illnesses, Dr Homola states, 'Many chiropractors believe that correction of mis-aligned vertebrae can restore health and that regular spinal adjustments are essential for maintaining health. There is no definitive, scientific evidence to support such a theory.' "Inside Chiropractic" provides essential information to consumers, physicians, insurance carriers, and all concerned with the field on the origins of chiropractic, doctor education, choosing a good chiropractor, 'sense and nonsense' in the practice, alternative healing, problems and questions that remain in chiropractic, and more.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poorly written book, lacks insight!, 11 Aug 1999
By A Customer
I read this book as a consumer seeking informative information about chiropractic as a vitalistic health care alternative. I have recently experienced amazing results from visiting my chiropractor. I live eat and sleep better now as a result of ciropractic care. So I decided to learn more about this chiropractic buy reading this book. It was very disapointing because it was so negatively written in tone and hasn't matched my experiences at all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inside Chiropractic: A must read text, 30 Jul 1999
By A Customer
I have just finished reading Dr. Homola's recent book Inside Chiropractic. Dr. Homola has once again adequately demonstrated the current problems that exist in the profession called chiropractic. In 1963, Dr. Homola was the lone voice in identifying the problems the chiropractic profession had. His work of 1963, Bonesetting, Chiropractic, and Cultism has been the influence for constructive reform that is so badly needed for the chiropractic profession. It is interesting to note that many of the current problems Dr. Homola discussed in 1963 are still prevalent 36 years later. Dr. Homola's book is a must read book for anyone contemplating either a career in chiropractic or wishing to understand the workings of the profession. Timothy A. Mirtz DC Lawrence, Kansas

4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent treatise on the current status of chiropractic., 4 Jul 1999
By A Customer
I have read "Inside Chiropractic" by Samuel Homola and edited by Dr,Stephen Barrett, and find it an excellent book and basically in agreement with mine, "Chiropractic the Greatest Hoax of the Century?", on the thesis that the chiropractic theory of a subluxation is false. I particularly admire the section on the "subluxation "issue in which he states this false theory lies at the very heart of chiropractic. His book mentions the futile attempts of professor Crelin's failure to demonstrate a subluxation on cadaver specimen, while my book sites Dr.C.Everett Koop's Cornell's professor unable to do the same thing. We have been in communication about our books ,after having written them, and are pleased to have contributed much, i believe, to the issue, he as a chiropractor and I as a medical doctor. Where we may not agree is with the controversial issue of chiropractic spinal manipulaion itself, especially for LBP. His book describes in considerable detail what manipulation presumably does to structures of the back, but theoretical at best. Even the AHCPR guidelines of 1996, reported in his book in complete detail, have been largely superceded by newer studies showing little benefit from manipulation. The book clearly negates the value of manipulation of the spine for non-musculoskeletal diseases and really does not spell out just what diseases chiropractic can effectively treat, and scientifically how this is accomplished. Dr Barrett's editorial contributions are quite cogent, as usual. Where the book disagrees with mine is that mine sees the demise of chiropractic either by a conversion of chiropractic colleges into medical schools as the osteopaths have done, or by a licensure limitation to only scientific physical therapy. Inside Chiropractic should be read by every 70,000 or so chiropractors in the US and those in Canada, and most certainly by any potential chiropractic student before embarking on chiropractic as a career. It took courage for a chiropractor to do so, but the book should contribute a considerable service to the health care reform movement.- Respectfully submitted, Dr Chot
