5.0 out of 5 stars A fine traveller's guide to whisky and distilleries, 2 Aug 1999
By A Customer
Before I found this little book in a shop in Oban, I thought the only true whiskey came from Bushmills in Co. Antrim, and that malts were strong peaty spirits with unpronounceable names. I flicked the pages to the thin section at the back on Irish whiskey and was astonished to read Jim Murray's evocative but accurate description of the little village of Bushmills with its painted kerbstones and ancient distillery. He followed the portrait of the distillery with a discourse on the relative merits of the four whiskeys produced there. You could almost taste the spirit. The book starts with a description of how whisky - and whiskey- is made and the regional differences between Scotch, Irish and Bourbon. There is a bit of chemistry and a bit of history. He then takes the reader on a tour of every active distillery in Scotland describing the setting, the family history and the style of the present owners. His descriptions of the different brands are usually positive sometimes exuberant and give the reader an active thirst for a 'wee dram' of some sublime 30-year-old Speyside malt. His reviews are never scathing, but his faint praise is wickedly effective. He follows Scotland with the whiskeys of Ireland and the Bourbons of the New World. Every distillery has its own story. It's part travel book, part social history and part the love-story of a real whisky drinker. I can only say that I've never since walked through an airport Duty-free without browsing the whiskies and occasionally bringing a bottle home. For two years, this little book has guided me, and my only criticism is that so many new brands have appeared on the shelves in the last two years, that it must be time for a revised edition.

4.0 out of 5 stars Terrific value for money, 31 Aug 1999
By A Customer
Many whisky books concentrate on labels and tasting notes. Murray, on the other hand, gives you not only a sense of the whisky but also a sense of the location and distillery it comes from.

His prose is vigorous and direct, fully informed by his considerable experience, and the reader is carried along in long swells of pure pleasure in reading the work of a man who knows his stuff and is enthusiastic about it.

Discussing whisky is like talking about great baseball players; there are honest differences of opinion, but Murray can be most persuasive, as well as entertaining.

This is the only book I take to Scotland when I go to visit distilleries. Some people have lifetime bird lists; I have a distillery list, and Murray is my preferred guide.

At the price, this is a terrific value.
