Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
This book is for IT professionals already au fait with current networking technologies who want to design, build or implement corporate networks based around Windows 2000.

Readers will probably be administrators of Windows NT 4.0 networks planning to upgrade to exploit features of the new system or those studying to take the Microsoft Certified Professional Exam 70 -216. Chapter 13 introduces Public Key Infrastructures, key elements of e-commerce, and the four types of Microsoft digital certificates that can be issued. It explains how companies can implement a Certificate Authority (CA) which will identify users by digital signatures and enable them to send encrypted e-mail. Issues covered include managing, revoking and renewing certificates.

Chapters are devoted to designing and building TCP/IP-based networks and to implementing enterprise wide security features. Others explain how to implement and troubleshoot features such as the Domain Name System (DNS), which allows computers connected to the Internet to be referred to by names rather than numbers: IPSec, a collection of technologies which provide protection against network attacks and the NWLink protocol, which enables users to integrate and migrate users from NetWare networks.

The book includes a CD-ROM containing a version of the operating system and instructions on how to install it, ring fenced from other systems. Each of the 14 chapters is divided into lessons on a specific topic, and prefaced by an useful estimate of how long each lesson should take. Each lesson includes a concise summary followed by questions designed to test the key concepts covered. There is an appendix with extensive review questions and a voluminous glossary. It is hard to see how this official Microsoft study guide would not be essential reading for any network designer planning to work with Windows 2000. It is certainly concise, well laid out and readable. More importantly, it is easy to cherry pick the topics you need to bone up on in a hurry.--Shan ni Ceallaigh

2.0 out of 5 stars Rushed, 1 Sep 2000

I've got the Pro and Server exams under my belt now and have previously qualified as an MCSE.

However this book is terrible and I have been forced to delay the matching exam twice. It contains numerous technical inaccuracies when compared with the Windows 2000 resource kit, Professional and Server training books.

The first mistake I ignored, the second made me laugh and then I had to begin double-checking.

As you read though the sections on RAS, NAT and Certificate services you can see omissions and errors. I found them based on previous working knowledge and confirmed them with the above-mentioned resources. This is the worst MS Press book I have bought - and I have 10!

The writing style is so bad it looks like it was translated 'to' English, confusing the subject.

It is also very short compared to the preparation kits for the other three core exams. Not enough depth?

If you must do the exam now, try it. Otherwise wait for the second edition.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Detailed Enough, 11 Sep 2001
By A Customer
Having used the Microsoft training kits for both the Professional and Server exams I was expecting great things from this book. I therefore used it as my base reference for taking the exam.

Disappointingly, if used alone it would take a miracle to pass the exam but if used in conjunction with real world experience and additional reading from the resource kit, it should just about do the trick.

I passed with it but then I have been using NT for the past nine years, so I may not be that representative!

2.0 out of 5 stars Just not up to the job, 11 Feb 2001

Totally agree with the first two reviews. This book is not in itself sufficiently detailed as to allows you to pass the 70-216 exam. A very disappointing book which covers all of the basic concepts, but does not expand on them in any of the depth that will be required.

Not only does this book contain errors but also it lacks substantial detail. The exam (and I have passed it) covers details not contained in the book at all. Read more
