5.0 out of 5 stars Always start with MS documents first, 25 Jun 1999
By A Customer
As a contract programmer that has used VB since 2.0, I recommend this set, along with the "Reference Library" for any serious programmer, from rookie to pro. With each VB generation, I reread the Programmer's Guide. For example, chapters 9 and 10 are a must before the reader is ready for Reference Library's "Component Tools Guide" (which teaches you how to design and build ActiveX components.

Caveat for the rookies: Visual Basic has become a very complex and powerful language since its first release, when it was supposed to be used for GUI prototypes. You will need to spend time and effort learning the language and the various Microsoft strategies. I recommend SAM's "Teach Yourself VBx In 21 Days" and other beginner books in addition to this one. You can do a lot useful programming without ever touching the ActiveX component development.

BTW, there is an index and, yes, you will be referred to the online help for details in a lot of subjects. But that will be details and broader understanding. This book is already over 900 pages. "War and Peace" we don't need.

4.0 out of 5 stars Start faster and go further., 12 Oct 2003
By Matthew L. Davies (High Peak, Derbyshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
A natural progression from Visual Basic Step-by-Step, this information packed guide is the easiest and fastest way to develop 32-bit windows applications. For those with the most basic (pardon the pun) understanding of this programming language the examples are clear and put the point across with a minimum of fuss. Those confused because they haven't been told to draw a combo box for a code snippit designed to clear a combo box should go back to learning from the first manual in the series. This book is very well written, very well presented and has increased my ability to add functionality to my applications.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good!, 14 Nov 1999
I had read VB step by step before reading this programmer's guide, so my judgement on whether it's good for beginner's is probably not accurate! But, this book is a very good companion to a "Starter book", I recommend buying this if you've already grasped the basics on VB - but if you're a beginner, it can be a little too hard. Visual Basic 6 Step by Step is what I started with, then went onto this one. I recommend this book!
