4.0 out of 5 stars More of a technical reference than a training guide, 5 April 2001
By A Customer
This book serves as an excellent technical reference, but will inevitably be too long for many people as a training guide due to its 1300+ pages. That may well reflect the complexity of Exchange Server, but its still difficult to recommend as a study guide for the MCSE exam. Having said the above, I have personally read & digested the whole book and found it to be a very comprehensive guide, referring back to it many times since passing the 70-081 exam. Of highlight are chapters 10 & 11 concerning the IMS and internet mail protocols, which should be very useful training for any mail administrator.

4.0 out of 5 stars It is long, but it's also comprehensive., 17 Nov 1999
By A Customer
I'd recommend this book (and much of the series for that matter) to people who are interested in having a reference book and a training guide rolled into one. It is a long book, and you certainly couldn't read it from cover to cover without taking time out to try the various different exercises, but it does go into many of the more complicated areas into some depth. Whilst some of the criticisms below are valid, they could be directed to any one of a range of similar titles. On the plus side, I've found the coverage of the book very complete, with information on topics here that are barely covered elsewhere. The bonus of 3 CDs included (including an Exchange 5.5 evaluation pack) increases this book's value; just a shame you have to download a patch from the web to get Exchange working - the shipped CD has already expired!

At the end of the day, you pay your money and take your choice. If I was studying for an MCP exam, I'd trust this guide to take me through all the course material and be a useful point of reference beyond that.

4.0 out of 5 stars In depth coverage of Exchange Server, 7 Mar 1999
By A Customer
This book is one of the most comprehensive Exchange Server study guides on the market. Its only problems: 1) it's big (1200+ pages), 2) its prose is sometimes difficult, and 3) it repeats itself too often. If it wasn't for these flaws, however, I would give it five stars. The Sybex guide is shorter and better written, but it doesn't cover all the material that this book does.

This guide is ideal if you are willing to invest the time it takes to learn the material. If you want a shorter exam guide, get the Sybex book (Easlick and Chellis) instead.
