5.0 out of 5 stars At last I've found a beginner's book written for beginners!, 16 Sep 1998
By A Customer
I've already purchased and gotten totally frustrated with Cue's Visual Basic 5 Night School, as well as Wrox Press's Beginning Visual Basic 5 by Peter Wright. Due in part to the poor editing of the former, and the annoying British-isms of the latter, I began to wonder if the material was simply beyond my grasp. Little did I realize that books are generally one of the least efficient ways for adults to learn technical material and that very few technical authors have the gift to communicate their subject in a supportive manner. If you don't have the time or the money to immerse yourself in a fast-paced interactive environment, such as an Approved Technical Education Center course, then thank your lucky stars for Michael Halvorson, who seems to be the only guy in the bunch that understands not only his subject, but who has the rare gift to communicate it.

3.0 out of 5 stars A book for the beginner, 19 Aug 1999
By A Customer
I bought this book to learn Visual Basic. I was a complete beginner, so this should be the perfect book. When I started it was at a very low level. Everyone without knowing to use a computer could read it. It was just to easy, but then it became better. You got used to the way it was build, and you got an overview of every project. The enclosed CD had also some usefull things, and that was nice. The bad thing was that the book didn't have anything about file-management, it was something I wanted to learn. An average book for the beginner.

3.0 out of 5 stars This book lost it's audience focus very quickly, 13 April 1999
By A Customer
This book lost it's audience focus very quickly and quickly accelerates the pace, leaving it's intended audience behind. The book starts out slowly and then accelerates the pace just when difficult concepts were being introduced. Microsoft Press books are attractively packaged but the content itself is often mediocre. This book unfortunately falls into that category. I bought John Smiley' 'Learn to Program' which even contains a working copy of Visual Basic 6. With Microsoft Press's book you have to supply your own.
