5.0 out of 5 stars Hardcore Visual Basic for Adults, 1 Dec 1998
By A Customer
A book that could well end up as a door stop waiting for you to be ready to read it. In the meantime a CD full of Type Library's and source code that can with little or no tweeking be used in your own apps. Put 1% of Bruce's book into practice and you will be a better programmer for it. With a deeper understanding of Windows and Visual Basic, classes defined and discussed in the book and supplied(CD) open up a wealth of answers and understanding. Look at any VB news group, Browsing files, API calls, String handling are all common questions and a just a few of the items that you will become quite expert in, and look back at those news groups with a knowing grin, if only they knew of Hardcore Visual Basic.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not for the faint-hearted but definitely worth the effort, 24 Oct 1998
By A Customer
Most programming books aren't worth the money. They are written for complete beginners or simply because the author needed to make some quick cash. This book is not like that.

McKinney's writing style takes some getting used to. That said, he attempts to lay out the details of the Win32 API and VB 5.0 perculiarities completely - there's a beginning, a middle and an end to each chapter. McKinney is also honest enough to admit his mistakes and share some of his wasted time and effort.

The book doesn't have an introductory section - it is detailed from Page 1 onwards and as such is not for the faint-hearted or the uninitiated. However, McKinney has succeeded in writing a book for the serious programmer and I'd commend it to anyone wanting to be able to make VB do more than just display forms.

4.0 out of 5 stars Yes you can do that in VB, 6 Jul 1998
By A Customer
This book takes great care to show you how to acheive the impossible. People who read, understand, and use the techniques described in this book are definitely a cut above the rest. However, after reading this book I found that I had the desire to do alot more complex stuff in VB. And I became frustrated that you have to jump through so many hoops to do it. Thus, I have devoted my full attention to learning Delphi. Why? because you can do all the complex stuff and it is a heck of alot easier and it's faster exe's and no runtime dll dependencies. If you find yourself using the techniques described in this book you might ask yourself why, and whether or not VB is the best tool for your needs.
