Product Description

Synopsis

Interstitial cystitis (IC) is a chronic inflammatory condition of the urinary bladder that can have a devastating impact on the quality of life - both for the patient and their loved ones. The disease is often debilitating and may cause the patient to experience feelings of helplessness and despair. IC has been an enigma to the medical profession for a long time, the condition is still frequently misdiagnosed as an acute urinary tract infection or cystitis, a disorder that can be treated with antibiotics. Although there is no cure for IC, the past decade has seen remarkable progress in promoting awareness of the disease and in the development of techniques to manage and relieve symptoms. In their odyssey through the medical system, IC patients routinely come in contact with a battery of unfamiliar tests, and their doctors may prescribe a variety of medications or even suggest surgical interventions. This guide is designed to uncomplicate the process and empower readers to make sure that they are getting the most appropriate treatment for their condition.

The author shows readers how to make a self-diagnosis, evaluates the latest medications and their side effects, and describes the latest, most up-to-date nonmedical and alternative strategies for managing and reducing symptoms.

3.0 out of 5 stars Useless for UK patients, 6 Feb 2002
By A Customer
This book is NOT for UK patients, since most of the treatments listed in it are not even available to us, according to my consultant. The chapter on sex is completely useless...it discusses NOTHING specific to IC, only to general urogenital pain, and could have been taken from any other useless book about sexual pain. The book offers little hope for an IC sufferer. If you're in the UK and you're looking for something to make you feel better, this book isn't it. If you want to read in-depth about the treatments the NHS will never let you have, this book is for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Okay and progressive information, 28 Mar 2002
By Dr. Sian Simmonds "siansimmonds" (Scotland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is good if you want to know about whole range of treatments and more information condensed into one book with which to question your consultant with.
If the treatments are in the USA they do tend to come to the Uk within time or on a named patient basis. We need a large range of information as not many consultants in UK even understand IC and treatments for it.
