5.0 out of 5 stars Buy this book, 8 Feb 2004
By A Customer
If you're reading this review, you probably want a book that will transform the way you deal with your children, put you back in control before you start yelling and enable you to parent calmly and effectively. Buy this book.

Rather than discussing problems in a theoretical or psychoanalytical way, the author gives you a wide range of options for dealing with everyday situations. You will wince as you read her accounts of conversations between parents and children and recognise yourself in them. However, she then gives you a selection of coping strategies that are simple to understand but very effective.

This book has enhanced my time with my boys (2&5) immeasurably. I have been astounded by how well the techniques work and how quick it was to pick them up. Last weekend, a friend marvelled at how 'calm and serene' I was as I got a group of running, screaming 4-6 year-olds (only 1 of them mine!) to behave and do as they were told instead. She has now borrowed the book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent parenting advice, 26 Oct 2002
By Derrick R. Bell (Ontario Canada) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I found this book very positive and helpful, much like "How to Talk so your Kids will Listen and listen so Kids will Talk". It teaches a balanced parenting approach, which is neither permissive/democratic or autocratic. The author shows parents how to take charge and provide the consistant structure that children need with confidence. Countless examples are used throughout the book.

Many different skills are explained, teaching parents the difference between discipline and punishment. Listed to are the many disadvantages and counter productive negative effects of spanking.

There is good advice for nurturing sibling relationships, understanding and coping with anger, and how important it is for parents to look after themselves as well. The last part of the book is devoted to providing ideas for dealing with all the common discipline situations such as homework, bedtime, mornings, interrupting, meal times, tantrums etc..

Another book which would make a good companion to this one is "Setting Limits" by Robert J MacKenzie.

I have recently read Elizabeth Pantley's book on sleep, "The No-Cry Sleep Solution" which is also a wonderful book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredibly real and practical guide to solving problems, 13 Aug 1999
By A Customer
As a elementary school teacher of 9 years, I have read countless books on discipline and child rearing. This book took me by complete surprise. Some of the scenarios in the book made me feel like they had been listening to me and my children. The realism and practicality of the book were very helpful. I have been talking about this book since I got it. All the books I've read in the past, always give the problem, and then, the solution is so unbelievably out of touch or so vague I end up just as frustrated as when I originally consulted the book. This book is just the contrary to that. It is really outstanding. I plan to raffle it off at my next back to school night.
