5.0 out of 5 stars Your Guide to all things Java on Linux, 28 Mar 2002
By Soulfriend (England UK) - See all my reviews
Java Programming on Linux focuses on teaching the reader how to use Java effectively on a Linux system. This text is not likely to suite a total beginner in Java or Linux even though it contains introductory chapters on both. It will cover everything you need to marry the two. This is a very exciting combination, as you shall see. The Author draws on his vast experience in software development to produce a book that is very comprehensive in its coverage of Java Technologies and the technicalities of using them with Linux. The book covers a huge range of topics. Here are a few points it covers to wet your appetite.

It contains a guide to installing and configuring Sun's Java Development Kit (and/or Runtime environment) on Linux. The book also discusses the pros and cons of all the major JDKs and Runtimes for Linux including kaffe - a clean room implementation of Java under gnu licence. (Which has to be worth a look for any Java Student) A discussion of Linux distributions and how to install them is also covered.

Want 3D acceleration from your hardware with Sun's Java 3D api its explained here! Could be great for game developers?

Learn how to compile Linux binaries from Java and that means fully native speed! However, this is not Java 2 compatible... yet! Also includes how to mix native and none native code and assesses the advantages of each method.

Learn to set up Linux as a powerful development environment. Learn which IDEs are available and how to use the gnu tools like 'make'. Also, learn about deployment on Linux and deployment to other Systems from Linux including how to deploy Java on Linux servers to support three-tier application architectures.

Application optimisation, we all know this is important with Java and the authors' knowledge of OS design and particularly Linux allows him to share some excellent tips. Ever wondered about decompiling, it is all in the book.

He explains how you can use Java to access Linux only features and issues from Xwindows and graphical rendering to threads and the kernel.

This book is a resource for Java Developers and Students who are interested in Linux as a platform and a great reference too. It will inspire you to learn of the possibilities and show you how to do all the astounding things where Linux and Java come into their own. Your exploration of the possibilities with Java and Linux will leave you eager to experiment and create masterpieces and from the book you will learn where to find more.

Learn about all the projects and their websites. There is even an Artificial Intelligence enhanced implementation of Java for Linux. (Only for real experts I imagine) Plus, did you know Linux kernels can be set up to recognise Java binaries and pass them to a runtime when you try to execute them (Try compiling your own kernel the option is there and well documented.) Nice eh?
