3.0 out of 5 stars Good source of information but limited in scope., 21 Jul 2009
By Andy Walker (South Yorkshire, England) - See all my reviews
In this book, Oakham provides a good introduction and overview of how to build a solid-body electric guitar by focusing on building a 'Fender Stratocaster' type guitar (comprehensive plans are included), probably the most copied design on the planet and the most suitable for the first time guitar builder.

As such, this book has a lot going for it, providing clear advice on wood-choice, design, construction and wiring plus plenty of useful practical tips. However, because of the 'fenderesque' focus, there are limited references to other types of guitar construction. The author skims over set, deep-set tenon and through-necks, concentrating instead (probably wisely) on how to make Fender type 'bolt-on' necks with a single truss-rod. A couple of useful pages on making angled scarf-jointed headstocks and through-neck guitar construction are included, but Oakham soon returns to Stratocaster territory. Plenty of information is provided on making custom guitar bodies, which includes splicing timbers, adding facing-timbers, veneers and bindings, but unfortunately little detail on carved-top styles such as LP or PRS guitars.

I do recommend the very good section on designing a custom top-nut. As an example, when I needed to make a wide nut (45mm), this book had all the numbers. In contrast, the book practically ignores the topic of finishing the instrument, managing to provide just one tiny paragraph tucked away in a corner, probably for the sake of completeness.

To sum up, this book provides lots of useful diagrams, images and general information relevant to making and setting up many types of solid-body electric guitar (design, materials, tools, techniques, intonation, action, fret dressing etc), but in my opinion it is let down by its tendency to skim over 'non-Fender' types of guitar builds, and its lack of information on guitar finishes (probably the thing people notice first).

Without doubt this book certainly contains lots of good stuff, however I must admit to feeling a bit mislead by the title. Despite this book being called 'Build Your Own Electric Guitar', I think it might be more accurate if re-titled as 'Construct Your Own Custom Stratocaster'.

If you're a novice builder or want to build a Stratocaster type of instrument, I can heartily recommend this book. However, as a design and constructon guide for some of the other guitars out there, it has self-imposed limitations which may leave you looking for answers elsewhere.

This is a very good text and picture (color) book for a newbee to guitarbuilding as I am. Very useful for the beginner who has to learn in depth what guitarbuilding is all about. A must have on your bookshelf!
