Good but not great., 11 Feb 2004
I was expecting a whole load of fantastic tips when I sat down to read this. And unfortunately I was disappointed. At first glance, the contents give the impression that the book is a treasure trove due to the diversity and range of topics covered. But then I started seeing that it was full of tips such as:- "Don't buy anything in the sales unless you really need it", - "Don't carry a handbag bigger than 9 inches" (or something silly like that), - "Double up your lipstick and use it as a blush and eyeshadow".. ugh, how unhygenic is that? My biggest problem with the book was with the way that the dietary tips were exploited. The author mentions various wonderful supplements and very temptingly touts their benefits without warning of the possible dangers. I was tempted to try a couple of the supplements and researched them online only to find that one was a steroid that hasn't been thoroughly tested and has some potentially horrible side effects. I'm glad I did my research instead of simply buying them on the strength of this book. I've given this book a rating of 3 because despite all the negatives I've mentioned, it is still enjoyable to flick through and has snippets of info on what models and actresses do to keep themselves beautiful. Also, there are some good tips in it that seem like they would be fun to try. This is the first beauty book I have ever read and wasn't sure what to expect. My conclusion is that it is an interesting flick albeit a bit light (sometimes dangerously light) on real content - Just to give another example about the incomplete information, the author mentions a home remedy for spots but doesn't say how long to apply it for. Basically, imagine "Readers Beauty Tips" sections that you get in women's magazines and you'll have a picture of what this book contains.
