4.0 out of 5 stars Be A Healthy Vegetarian, 15 Mar 2004
Being a HEALTHY vegetarian is very important. I have been a vegetarian for two years and feel so full of life. This book proves that the myth of 'underweight, malnutritioned' vegetarians is false. It tells you what you need to eat to keep your energy levels up, and what to eat to keep protein levels high, which is really tricky for vegetarians, since this is where meat usually comes in. This is Davis and Melina's second book on being vegetarian. They are very similar but in my opinion you should buy this version as it is more concise for new vegetarians.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent source of info and very clear, 1 Jul 2006
By K. I. Maston (Sydney, Australia) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I have been a vegetarian for 7 years, but this is the first nutrition book I've bought. It has taught me so many new facts about different foods and what nutrients they contain, nearly all plant foods contain protein, I always thought it was only nuts and legumes! This book is clear and well laid out. Its not too biased either, and just states the facts. It has plenty of clear tables comparing nutritional values of different foods, and tells you what pattern of nutrients you need to be healthy. It has chapters on protein, minerals (iron, zinc especially), calcium, vitamins from fruits and vegetables, vitamin B12, also info about the vegetarian diet for all stages of life. It provides examples of good daily food plans, and has some recipes at the back too.

Reading this book has taught me so much new information, and my diet is much the better for it. I am now so much better informed about nutrition than most meat-eating people I know, so I am very well equiped to answer all those questions about where I will get my protein/iron/calcium from. Finally, I now feel very confident in my choice to become a vegetarian because I can see now how easy it is to get a balanced and healthy plant-based diet.

I definately recommend this book!

4.0 out of 5 stars Maybe not the best for beginners, 16 Feb 2009
By T. Jensen (Bath) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
As a recently converted vegetarian I was worried about my nutrition and sought a book on the subject. This book is packed with all of the information any vegetarian needs to create a balanced diet and not leave out any essentials.
However, the name seems to beckon at "newbie" vegetarians such as myself, and it is a bit overwhelming to start with. I am, however certain, that I'll enjoy this book once I get more accoustemed to the diet.
If you're looking to start off slowly I would recommend trying a different book first. But if you want all the nutritional facts this is the book for you.
