5.0 out of 5 stars An inspiration to anyone interested in spirituality and soul, 28 May 2001
By A Customer
Coffee table style books have never been quite my cup of tea. They tend to be rather lacking in "inner" substance, but since Derek Biermann's "Samadhi" came into this house, it has had a permanent place on the table top and is frequently browsed through and admired. Sometimes it is the beautiful black and white photographs that provide a feast for the during those throwaway minutes. Those profound faces captured so skillfully by Biermann who was formerly a dance photographer and then reached some acclaim in the fashion magazines of Australia. The material world and its obsession with glamour and wealth began to bore him and he headed to India with his backpack, notebook and camera. It is a lovely story how Goethe's old mate, Providence, sent him on his journey with in his pocket an advance from a wise and faithful publisher. This was a book that was meant to grace the shelves and be shared with the rest of us. Thus Biermann had the means to spend several months in that country of wild extremes and had the courage to approach so many holy men and women and speak to them in such earnesty about the spiritual paths they had chosen. Amongst others, there are Buddhists, Hindus, Christians, Jains, Muslims, Gyan yogis (who follow the path of wisdom) and Bhakti yogis (who devote and render service to God in form). These are all passionate people who love their spirituality and that is where the real strength of this book lies in that it gives many of us Westerners a first glance at just how deep and meaningful a life in search of God is (in whatever form or non-form She or He is deemed to take). Personally I find it extremely inspirational and sometimes crave to be able to reach such a level of commitment to my path as some of the subjects in the book, which includes the Dalai Lama. Spirituality is a sacred and yet beautiful thing. This fine book, "Samadhi", really brings that to bear. For anyone remotely interested in spirit, soul or God, I have no reservation in recommending this publication.
