5.0 out of 5 stars Deeply Spiritual, 26 Oct 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: The Secrets of Aikido (Paperback)
The best book I've read. I practise Aikido for four years and I never knew of the conexions of Aikido with the gods untill I read this book. Not only it talks about Yin and Yang, but it talks about the way of Aiki. Very, very spiritual. For somebody who's not sure of which book to buy, I strongly advise to buy this one. It changed my Aikido life radically.

2.0 out of 5 stars won't benefit you in aikido, 1 April 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The Secrets of Aikido (Paperback)
Ueshiba, though he explained many things in aikido using esoteric language, did not want anyone to adopt his religious beliefs. John Stevens tends to focus on the more esoteric aspects and to give credence to the more rediculous stories about Ueshiba. Though some of his books are good, this one really talks more about shinto/buddhism. He draws some interesting relationships between some techniques and relgious postures - though I think this is speculation. Also the pictures of himself doing aikido are not very inspiring (most look quite static, in those that don't you can see that there is little uke-nage relationship and he may as well be practicing on his own).

Some interest for photos of Ueshiba. Also the structure of the book (the 6 pillars of aikido - relating to six techniques) is interesting. However it won't improve your aikido or your understanding of Ueshiba (buy John Stevens biography of Ueshiba - invincible warrior, instead). Buy this if you are interested in shinto and the implications of some of Ueshibas religious beliefs. Don't buy it if you want to improve your aikido.

1.0 out of 5 stars Cloud Cuckoo Land, 31 Aug 2003
This review is from: The Secrets of Aikido (Paperback)
Once again Stevens is in Cloud Cuckoo Land worshiping Ueshiba as some kind of God like symbol, but all we see here is Stevens with "nothing new" just the dregs of a dead man... a pattern of another mans martial art, not his own.

Have some respect for your selfs !

Wake up friends !
