Product Description

Synopsis

Nonbelievers are often portrayed as demons. Warren Allen Smith wants you to know that they are not. In fact they are important and constructive members of society who positively influence our life and culture in many ways. This book provides short biographical sketches of prominent people who have belief systems that run against the grain. Included are atheists, agnostics, freethinkers and humanists and just about every other strain of sceptic imaginable. Some the names familiar to readers are: Woody Allen, Marlon Brando, George Carlin, George Clooney, Marlene Dietrich, Jodi Foster, Katharine Hepburn, Sally Jesse Raphael, Christopher Reeve, Howard Stern and Uma Thurman.

5.0 out of 5 stars Celebrities in Hell, 28 Jun 2002
By C. R. G. Ellis "Royston Ellis" (Kaikawala, Induruwa, Sri Lanka) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
"Celebrities in Hell" is one of those fascinating books to dip into whenever you have an idle moment, instead of reading right through like a novel. Yet most of the people profiled lead lives that read better than the best fiction.

Celebrities are described as people who are 'well-known' and hell as somewhere 'a person with a free mind...would enjoy the company of others who think differently.' So sharing space between these covers are such odd bods as Peter Ustinov, Marlene Dietrich, John Lennon, Lyle Stuart, Bruce Willis, Giuseppe Verdi, Royston Ellis and Joe Hill. And if you don't know who they are and what they think, this book tells you.

Warren Allen Smith has been compiling data on professed atheists, agnostics, freethinkers, humanists and just about every other strain of skeptic imaginable for over 50 years. This paperback is a distillation of the 10,000 entries in his massive tome "Who's Who In Hell". It's witty, academically sound, inexpensive, and a 'helluva' good read.
