3.0 out of 5 stars The Samurai Sword Workout, 4 May 2008
By R. L. Flood (Devon UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is by no means a review of this book. I have only seen it very briefly and the reason I picked it up was by sheer incredulity that someone would include "samurai sword" and "kick butt" in the same sentence. I accept that the author has worked hard on the presentation and arrangement and the book has been thought out however the traditional sword arts of japan - Iaido, Kendo and Iai-Jitsu are hardly the forum for an aerobic workout. They are practiced as traditional arts, comparable to moving zen and a way (-do) of learning more about the self and reducing the ego, they are not intended to be used as part of a "kick butt" training program. What's next? "The Yoga Guide to Cigar Smoking" or perhaps the "Bujinkan Ninjitsu Guide to Home Baking". I am sorry but this book is clearly pushing the limits of what is an acceptable interpretation of traditional Japanese Arts: it must be pretty damaging to Iaido considering the commerciality of cheap copies of Samurai swords and the recent legislation in force as of April 2008. I think most ken-bushi would share the same sentiment, but of course this is only my opinion.

1.0 out of 5 stars An utter waste of time and money., 14 Jan 2009
By N. Johnston "Nick Johnston" (Dublin, IRL.) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I examined this title in a bookshop once, scarcely able to believe what I was looking at. If it is your wish to get fit, run round your local park. If you have any interest in classical budo, don't bother with this book, as it will probably only serve to irritate you. "Kick Butt and Get Buff" - for crying out loud...

I cannot believe that the author has any real interest in budo or has attempted any serious form of training in any style of japanese swordsmanship. This is either a well-intentioned attempt at an exercise manual by a deluded fitness freak, or a crass and cynical marketing exercise. You'd be better off burning your money.

I have given it one star only because the review editor wouldn't accept this review without awarding it something; in fact it is not worthy of anything.
