Product Description

Product Description

A Scientific Adventure by Messrs Ian Edginton & D'Israeli. Purveyors of fantastic fiction for young gentlefolk and the mentally deficient. A decade after the Martians' abortive assault on the Earth and their attempt to establish an invasion bridgehead on the British Isles, the industrious Victorians have assimilated the Martian technologies into their everyday lives. Hansom cabs now scuttle along the Capital's streets on multi-limbed crab legs and the terrible monopoly of the Martian heat-ray has assured the dominance of the British Empire over two thirds of the Earth's surface and whose benign tyranny looks to continue to do so far into the next century. However, there is something rotten at the heart of empire. When the bodies of several young women are found washed up on the Thames, drained of blood, enter Captain Robert Autumn (retired soldier turned gentleman-adventurer) and his former Sergeant Major-now manservant-Archie Currie. Together they are drawn into the mystery which leads them from the gin palaces of the East End, and the grinding poverty of the North, to Whitehall's corridor's of power and the very Hall of the Martian King!

5.0 out of 5 stars British Comics at it's best, 17 Feb 2007
British popular culture is having a resurgence at the moment- no longer putting on fake American accents but being proud to speak in our own voices.

You're seeing it in movies: Hot Fuzz, Notes On A Scandal, The Queen. It's most notable in music where we see the historic feat that the album charts are totally full of UK artists: Amy Winehouse and Lilly Allen could come from nowhere else.

And similarily, in comics: In this and it's companion books -'War Of The Worlds' and the forthcoming 'Big Game', Ian Edington and Disreli have crafted a quintissentially British comics series. You couldn't imagine this as the product of a Manhattan comics company- it's so English it could be a lazy hazy Saturday afternoon of Grandstand and Doctor Who snacking on Salt & Vinegar crisps, guzzling a bottle of Dandelion & Burdock.

Echoing and extending the marvels of Wells' source novel they've produced a rare gem. Deft script, stunning visuals marry to show what's best about the Graphic Novel form. Worth checking out is their unrelated but thematically linked 'Leviathan'.

2.0 out of 5 stars Scarlet Traces....follow up to war of the worlds-, 19 Jan 2005
By Mr. G. P. Schofield "fortysixter" (UK, South London) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
As mentioned in the title, this books is about what happens in the UK after the events that occurred in War of the Worlds.

First things first, it comes across very much like the League of extraordinary gentlemen, whose second volume actually happens through the war of the worlds invasion.

Anyway, back to this book.

Presentation is excellent, its approx 80+ pages, and is hardbound, and colour thoughout, a good quality paper has been used, and all the artwork is clear and tells the story very well. Some elements of the frames hark back to the frame by frame action shots that happened in watchmen. Overall, good presentation then !

The story.

I was told about the story by a friend whilst we were visiting comics showcase in london, and the story sounded very interesting. So when the opportunity arose to read a copy of the book, I did so.

It centres a round a retired english colonel and his staff sergeant whom he has employed as his man servant. England has become the greatest power in the world, thanks to the martian technology that the UK scientists have reverse engineered. The heat ray, the walking vehicles, even the red weed, have been utilised to benefit mankind.

But there is something sick and corrupt in the heart fo the government, and it is a spate of young girls suddenly turning up dead in thames, with all the blood sucked from their bodies that urges our two heroes into action.....a thoroughly enjoyable investigation follows, leading our heroes deep into the baddies lair.

The one and only problem I had with this, was that the story was left unfinished, I won't tell you what happenes to the main characters, but the major event at the end ( don't read anymore if you don't want to know) is that the UK stages an invasion of Mars, all the rockets take off, and the book finishes, and you never get to see what happens, lets hope another graphic novel is produced to show us all what happens next.

No indicator is left at the end to imply a follow up is coming...usually a comic will finish with a " to be continued " or some such comment...not here however, and that lends itself to a MUCH lower score.

OVERALL

Recommended, a good read, but a frustrating end means I have to mark it down from a 4 out of 5 to a 2 out of 5.

4.0 out of 5 stars Scarlet Traces by Ian Edginton, 7 Jun 2007
By S. Johnson "sijon" (uk) - See all my reviews

The cover has changed to the one advertised; the one I received is green with yellow and red logo lettering for the title with a small 'boxed window drawing of the planet earth. The quality of this publication is of identical quality to the War of the Worlds Dark Horse release by the same author and illustrator which is very nice indeed. Thumbing through the book I was impressed with the vibrate colours of the artwork and the easy reading and clarity of the text. I would probably only recommend this book to the die-hard War of the Worlds fan. I would, however, like to see this made into a good version movie. The story is left 'hanging' I thought.
