Intelligent and beautiful all at once, and a slap in the face to anyone who ever said comics were for kids. Shirow's first work is an awesome example of sci-fi manga at it's best. Political and philosophical, and with some incredible action, this first book in the acclaimed series introduces you to the characters and setting excellently, while being an entertaining read in itself.

So why only four stars instead of five?

In places Shirow is highly literate and complex in his writing style, and although the translation into English is excellent, there are one or two spots in the book (which by the author and translators own admission), are a little convoluted when it comes to following the plot, especially if you aren't an attentive reader.

That said this is still a superb read, and highly recommended.

appleseed is the first work of shirow masamune. it is hardcore mecha action at its best. This books main theme however is the ethics of genetic engineering, and the imposibility of creating a utopian society. this is one exellent book. a must have for all manga lovers!!

A perfect example of what greatness comes from Shirow. Mechs, girls with guns and a future that is very possible; all portrayed very well in Shirow's first work, from 1986. Check out the other books!
