Product Description

Synopsis

One night Detective Inspector Irene Huss, stationed in Goteborg, Sweden, is called through the rain-drenched wintry streets to the scene of an apparent suicide of a wealthy financier, connected with the first families of Sweden. His mangled body has landed on the icy ground, just feet away from an old lady walking her dog. But the "society suicide" turns out to have been a carefully plotted murder. As more murders ensue, she tangles with motorcycle gang members, skinheads, immigrants, and neo-Nazis, a cross-section of Sweden's disaffected, until ultimately this detective and mother of two discovers which of the many suspects actually killed the Swedish millionaire and why.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Crime Novel, 13 May 2007
Did the previous reviewer read the same book as me?! "Detective Inspector Huss" gripped me from page one. The plot, setting and characterisation were all masterly and in my opinion Helene Tursten is fit to stand beside other fine Swedish crime writers(and perhaps even give them a few lessons too!) The book contained interesting insights into Swedish life and the translation into English was excellent. I will be searching out more novels by this author and can heartily recommend her to anyone who enjoys a good crime novel.

1.0 out of 5 stars going through the motions, 29 Jan 2007

(REAL NAME)
A very disappointing read. The characterisation is thoroughly stereotyped and the attempts to do something imaginative with the figure of the heroine don't get off the ground. I finished the novel from a sense of duty, having begun it, but although I am generally enthusiastic about Scandinavian crime literature, I will not be reading any more Tursten. The reviews on amazon.com are pretty much in line with this view.

1.0 out of 5 stars Major disappointment, 15 Nov 2008
By Mae Gregory (Darlington, Western Australia) - See all my reviews
Detective Inspector Huss The idea that this is Sweden's answer to Prime Suspect is ridiculous. The main problem may lie in the use of the title Detective Inspector Huss instead of a translation of the original title. I have never read such a mishmash of writing styles that I can recall. Maybe the American translation is to blame, I'm not sure but in any case I got really irritated by the writing and words like 'broad'(this is by no means a Phillip Marlowe), by descriptions of what was being eaten and so much else unrelated to the crimes being investigated which seemed to be just things thrown in to bulk out the story lines. Rather read Steig Larsson, Henning Mankell and other Scandinavian writers if you want good crime.
