Living well until our last moments, and then dying well.
While helping several friends with terminal cancer and AIDS prepare for death,I wanted to understand how facing death might define how we lived; and how the way we lived might define how we died.I have found that when we accept our own mortality, we can glimpse a many-dimensioned universe wherein life and death are part of the same glorious Whole. These are stories of five people's preparations for death, interspersed with stories and commentary from my own life about aging, the biology and history of death, and how to gaze calmly at the fact of mortality. This book is about what I have observed in the intimacy of watching friends prepare for their passage. It is about their experience as they communicated with me, and about my experience as I watched them decline physically and emerge spiritually. It is about the caregivers' role, and the reactions of family and friends. It is about resistence and acceptance and coping. It is about preparing for death in a way that is Whole - physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. Most deeply, it is about using the experience to learn how to love.

This book has helped me through one of the most delicate stage in my life, death. As I write this review, I sit with my laptop upon my hospital bed. Beside me is a copy of 'The experience of a lifetime'. I look at the book and think of how it has changed me.
