2.0 out of 5 stars Handmade Nation, not as good as I'd hoped , 22 Feb 2009
By Valentine (Bristol, Avon United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
I'm sorry to say Handmade Nation wasn't as good as I'd hoped. I was full of goodwill for this book and for Faythe Levine, being a crafter myself. But it's a book that can be browsed through and ... well, that's it really. You look at the glossy pictures, read far too short interviews with crafters/artists that aren't in depth enough to be very meaningful, and then the book goes on the shelf and it slips from your mind. If you want a much better value book about the ressurgence in craft go for Amy Spencer's The Crafter Culture Handbook. A nice fat book full of insight into craftspeoples work, plus patterns & instructions on how to make a vast range of items. Plus longer pieces on knitting, the new domesticity, a good resources section. It's better value and a practical size and layout.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Really Good Book, 1 Mar 2009
I bought this as a birthday present for my friend and she loved it. It's full of amazing artists with information on all of them there inspiration and working method.

The book itself is pretty to look at and well put together with really good photography, which makes it enjoyable to look through. I was almost tempted to buy one for myself.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad, not special, 6 Feb 2010
By ELEANE (Greece) - See all my reviews
There has certainly been a revolution in business in the recent years. Small based entrepreneurs have created niche markets for themse;ves and their friends, and this is a good thing. This book showcases such pioneers. If you are interested in the indie community, you may have seen their websites already. What the book does is bringing together some of these people and their work.
However, it does not offer anything more substantial than what you would find in Etsy profiles, for example. There isn't any work put in assessing the "why" and the "how" behind these people and their business. In that, the book disappoints. It is useful if you want an introduction to the indie scene in the States.
