Product Description

Synopsis
Many think that sub-Saharan African architecture is little more that mud huts. Mud, yes-but certainly not huts. These buildings show sculptural beauty and ingenuity. James Morris has spent four months photographing these modern jewels and shows that these works are aesthetic treasures and structures with architectural relevance.

5.0 out of 5 stars magnificent, 13 Oct 2004
By A. Manley "Andrew" (London United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I should declare a double interest here. First, the photographer James Morris is personally known to me and I have always admired his work: over the years he has turned himself into one of the world's leading architecture photography practitioners. Second, I used to live in the desert-edge region of West Africa (Mali, Burkina Faso,Benin, Togo, northern Nigeria) that 'Butabu' covers.

That out of the way, this book is magnificent. Morris, despite little previous experience in the region, has captured the very essence of some of the world's most beautiful and historically charged mud/adobe structures, from the massive, awesome extent of the main mosque in the historic Malian city of Djenne, through to intimate details of family courtyards which have often been standing -- albeit with yearly renovations to stop them crumbling to nothing-- for hundreds of years. As a work of social and visual history in its field, it is an unparalleled achievement in recent times. As a simple art object, it shows a clean pair of heels to most other coffee table books I've ever seen.

Suzanne Preston Blier's text is erudite and intellectually challenging, drawing upon a range of academic disciplines and bursting with perspectives which even regional specialists will find thought-provoking.

Overall, this book's reputation deserves to go before it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unique, 2 Jan 2004
By B. Gannon - See all my reviews

A spectacular view of spectacular buildings. This view of Africa, and the beauty of its buildings in a harsh environment, amazed me. The skill - and initiative - of the photographer in capturing these images is to be admired and praised: very few people in the Western world could have seen these wonderful buildings before James Morris brought these pictures to us. A unique view of unique and beautiful architecture.
