Product Description

Synopsis

Tolleson Design, located in San Francisco since its inception in 1984, produces corporate and product identity, annual reports, Web and interactive design, packaging, and environmental graphics for a client base that includes Nike, Kodak, Microsoft, and Virgin Interactive. Steve Tolleson's approach to design might best be described as scientific: it involves relentless research in which every element of a project - down to its letterforms - is subject to rigorous study through almost imperceptible permutations. The end results of this process are designs which are meticulously executed, sometimes cerebral, but never without emotion and wit. This is an investigation of the cycles of Tolleson Design creative process through a textual and graphic layering of information involving four phases: research (the intake of as much information as they can gather); collaboration (with the client and with the other members of the creative team); visual exploration (the workbook process, which includes refinements and the examination of multiple options); and environmental influences (consideration of the ultimate purpose of the solution).

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure Inspiration, 31 Jan 2002
By C. Woods (Crayford, Kent) - See all my reviews

This book is awesome. A book from a design firm previously unknown to me.

The thing that sets this book apart from other graphic design books is that it documents the creative process used to achieve the final presented outcomes, rather than simply saying 'here is what we did'.

The work is fresh, modern and meticulously methodical. Strict patterns of working are followed, but the end result is always very different. There is a real visual science to the way these guys work, and that can be seen in the technical diagrams that feature in their annual reports, to the clinical look of their work for Urban Outfitters.

When you have creative block, a leaf through this book really does help mentally open doors you hadn't thought of and inspire to do something new.

Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars one of the best design books I own., 3 May 2001
By A Customer
This is a great book. It informs and entertains and contains strong and varied design work. Imagery is well produced and well considered. The text is precise and informs the work, the design process and gives an insight into the thinking of a successful design studio.

4.0 out of 5 stars very insightful, 25 Jul 2007
By Db Weedon - See all my reviews

What makes this book so great and unique is that it illustrates in detail all the thought processes of the design team. Taking us through nearly 50 different projects it enlightens as to why and how they come up with their final designs.

Tolleson Design's approach is very systematic, almost scientific, which I think is reflected in (and possibly limits?) all of their work. To me there is not all that much stylistic variation and everything seems a bit clinical, though I'll leave you to form you own opinion on that.

If you want to gain insight into the thought processes of a significant design house then definitely get this book. If you are looking for something illustrating stylistic variation then I suggest you get a different one.
