Product Description

Synopsis
The city of New York is the city of skyscrapers. Every visitor to Manhattan experiences the awe of gazing up at the soaring towers of Wall Street or Midtown, and wonders how they came to be built. This book answers this question, presenting 75 of the most significant buildings in the skyline. From Louis Sullivan's Bayard-Condict building of 1898 to the Conde Nast tower rising above Times Square, this book presents over 100 years of New York's most interesting and important tall buildings. It profiles familiar skyscrapers such as the Woolworth Building, the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building, the World Trade Towers, the AT&T Building, and the Seagram Building, while also championing several often-overlooked yet significant structures, such as the McGraw-Hill. For each building, the author identifies the building style, the overall profile and image, and discusses its construction as well as presenting quotes from the buildings' architects.

4.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful pictorial record of a skyline's details., 21 April 2007
By Nicholas Casley (Plymouth, Devon, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Manhattan Skyscrapers (Hardcover)
The four stars I have given are almost wholly in respect of the superb photographic reproductions in this book. The eighty-two entries each have a full-page photograph on the left-hand side that is coupled with a descriptive text on the facing page on the right, and there are additional group shots at the book's start and end. The paper is good quality.

Of course, not all skyscrapers are covered: indeed, there are some listed that do not truthfully merit the description. But most of the prominent ones are here, and the most famous - or notorious - often merit four or more pages. The structures covered date from the American Tract Society Building of 1896 to the proposed Freedom Tower of 2008.

I do have a gripe with the text, which often bares little relation to the photographic plates provided. Of course, not all of a building's features can be shown in such a cursory guide as this, but often I found the choice of language clumsy and obscure. Open any page and you will find text such as this: "Setting such an unstable object within the complex's static symmetry makes the whole space vibrate and flow with a modernist sense of energy, much like the figure-ground effects of the shallow-setbacked tower against the broad sky." If this language speaks to you, all well and good, but I found it too abstract and often meaningless.

It is a shame that no map of Manhattan is provided, showing the rough locations of the buildings depicted, but a good bibliography and glossary is provided at the end.

This is a substantial volume that looks good on any coffee table. It's one of those books for dipping into now and again to admire the architectural glories of Manhattan, without having to bother too much with the textual description. I'm glad I bought it, if for no other reason than enabling me to recognise afresh from new angles these marvels of New York on my next visit.

4.0 out of 5 stars Informative & well presented. A must for skyscraper fanatics, 18 Aug 2000
By A Customer
Almost every famous or ground breaking building is in this book. Eric gives a superb mix of concise technical data & light hearted facts about each skyscraper. The standard of the plates is excelent as is the overall quality of printing. A great large format book worth every penny of the cover price

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic insight into NYC's finest architechture...., 23 April 2009

This review is from: Manhattan Skyscrapers (Hardcover)
If you are like myself and are fascinated with New York City then this is highly recommended. The photography is superb. The text is very interesting and informative. I own a few books on hotels and skyscrapers in New York and this is certainly one of the better ones.
The book itself isn't exactly practical for a read on the bus or train due to its size (huge!!) and weight (heavy!!).
