4.0 out of 5 stars Essential reading for the modern Grand Tourist, 27 Dec 2001
By A Customer
This is a charming book filled with very useful information regarding these most magical places and is exactly as it says in the title. There are some very good photographs and a few hints and tips about the area the gardens are to be found in, as well as details of opening hours etc. It should be noted, however that these opening times are invariably wrong but then Italy Lovers would expect this any way!
The contemporary decriptions of the gardens are accurate and quite detailed in those favourite few. For example Villa Lante close to Viterbo in Lazio. There are also some historical details and this book will most certainly help you in your quest for learning more about the progression of The Italian garden.
There are some very nice touches and I particularly appreciate the sketches of the garden layouts. It makes a good companion to Edith Wharton's book and Helena Attlee and Alex Ramsay's guide of the same name, Italian Gardens.
Once again it's an excellent book for those dark winter evenings, but one that will help and inspire you to put your Italian itinerary together for your next trip! I heartily encourage you to read it.
