By Chris "Been there, played that, and this is it!" Jones, 8 Mar 2000
Ok, Ive been role playing nigh on 19 years, Ive been through the Keep on the Borderlands, Castle Amberville, The Tomb of Horrors, and had the misfortune to tread the halls of Rolemaster. AD&D 1st Edition?, Rolemaster 1st Edition?, Traveller 1st edition?, I was there. What Im saying is, I think I know what Im talking when I say, "this Role Playing Game, is the best you will play". It actualy frightened one of my mates. It has mood, atmosphere and a game engine my 6 month old boy could use, my 11 year old boy is using it... I highly recommend you purchase the brilliant Campaign adventure called "The Masks of Nyarlathotep" [spelling?], these two works of art are, well...works of art. Masks of Nyralathotep scored 10 out of 10 in the now sorely missed but not forgotten Arcane Role Playing magazine [come back lads! ]. A true classic that has stood the test of decades...buy it, and play it by candle light, I dare you...Im serious...

The one to buy!, 31 Jul 2001
By A Customer
Having been playing RPGs since 1983, I have to say that if you are only ever going to buy one set of RPG rules, this is the one to get. The rules are amazingly easily to get your head round, and not difficult to tinker with either. It is an excellent introductory game for people new to RPGs, as it uses the background of the 'real' world of HP Lovecraft's books and short stories in the 1920s and 1930s. Easily adaptable to other time periods too - apart from modern games, we have also played in the 16th century! The background of the Cthulhu Mythos is also magnificent, and has a great deal more depth than the schlock you get from some other horror RPGs. Steer clear if you don't like horror/mystery RPGs, but there is a good reason why this won first place in Arcane's survey of the top 100 RPGs of all time.

The Best for 20 Years, 14 Dec 2002
Without doubt you won't ever play anything as smooth, well-honed, simple and entertaining as this. All the atmosphere of the taut horror of H P Lovecraft gathered into one spot... If you think, 'I haven't read any of that - so why should I be interested in this?'. Well, buy this and you'll certainly expand your horizons for the better - cause you'll want to read all of Lovecraft's work straight afterwards. If you like horror for the mind (instead of gore and splatter horror - which doesn't really even deserve the name horror), the sort that leaves your skin creeping and keeps you awake at night... the sort of horror that lurks in the back of the mind and comes to bite you in your nightmares... this is for you. A superb game that has matured with age and rightfully deserves the high accolades it has received.
