Product Description

Product Description
Many computer graphics resaerchers are exploring non-photorealistic rendering techniques as an alternative to realistic rendering. Defined by what it is not, non-photorealistic rendering brings art and science together, concentrating less on the process and more on communicating the contents of an image. Techniques that have long been used by artists can be applied to computer graphics to emphasize the subtle attributes, and to omit extraneous information. This book provides an overview of the published research on non-photorealistic rendering in order to categorize and distill the current research into a body of usable techniques. A summary of non-photorealistic rendering algorithms, as well as pseudo-code for producing some of the images, is included.

2.0 out of 5 stars Rather thin, 4 Jul 2002
By A Customer
The authors attempt to summarise a number of NPR techniques published prior to the year 2000. This is an ambitious goal given the already quite broad scope of the field, and consequently many techniques are, in my opinion, only glanced upon. Results of algorithms tend to be stated, but little detail given as to their operation. Those techniques that are well documented tend to be explained through a psuedo-code which is a little too much like C to easily read, but a little too far from C to easily implement.
I would recommend this book as suitable for those who wish to learn what NPR is capable of.. but not for those who wish to implement or research NPR algorithms. The latter would be better off reading the background paragraphs of relevant published literature e.g. in SIGGRAPH.

5.0 out of 5 stars Alternative perspective of 3D world, 24 Oct 2001
This book is about rendering methods. Alternative rendering methods. It's not about turning your 3D models into some photo, no. It's about making your 3D scene in to a piece of artwork. For example, water colour, oil colour, realistic pencil sketch, cartoon look etc. Have you ever seen an animation that each picture looks like a master piece of oil on canvas? Well you can grab this book and making one yourself then. Highly recommended for people with a sense of art.
