Book Description

The world-famous novel about the triumphant story of St. Luke

Man of science, and Gospel writer

Today St. Luke is known as the author of the third Gospel of the New Testament, but two thousand years ago he was Lucanus, a Greek, a man who loved, knew the emptiness of bereavement, and later traveled through the hills and wastes of Judea asking, "What manner of man was my Lord?" And it is of this Lucanus that Taylor Caldwell tells here in one of the most stirring stories ever lived or written.

Lucanus grew up in the household of his stepfather, the Roman govenor of Antioch. After studying medicine in Alexandria he became one of the greatest physicians of the ancient world and traveled far and wide through the Mediterranean region healing the sick.

As time went on he learned of the life and death of Christ and saw in Him the God he was seeking. To find out all he could about the life and teachings of Jesus, whom he never saw, Lucanus visited all the places where Jesus had been, questioning everyone--including His mother, Mary--who had known Him or heard Him preach. At last, when he had gathered all information possible, he wrote down what we now know as the Gospel according to St. Luke.

Taylor Caldwell has chosen the grand, the splendid means to tell of St. Luke. Her own travels through the Holy Land and years of meticulous research made Dear and Glorious Physician a fully developed portrait of a complex and brilliant man and a colorful re-creation of ancient Roman life as it contrasted in its decadence with the new world Christianity was bringing into being. Here is a story to warm, to inspire, to call forth renewal of faith and love lying deep in each reader's heart. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

4.0 out of 5 stars A nice and enchanting story of S:T Luke, the Evangelist., 14 May 2001
By A Customer
This novel deserves to be placed perhaps not among the pearls of great catholic literature, but as a book worth reading and a very entertaining one. That 572 page brick invites to a very exciting journey in time, at the approaching dawn of the Roman Empire and the very beginnings of Christianity. S:T Luke, or as he is called here Lucanus, is a Greek gentile, born of freed slaves. He is a physician and wonderworker. We follow him on his path of life, in his search for the ultimate truth. Lucanus is in his early childhood initiated into some secrets meaning of which eventually is revealed to him later. Prior to that our hero goes through many sometimes very dramatic episodes. He tries to escape his destiny and to deny the truth lurching just in the corner. Overhelmed by the body of evidence which he experienced through his very adventurous life he finds finaly the ultimate centre of all his passions and longings. The book continues in S:T Lukes Gospel and Acts of the apostles.

The work is written with a glow charasteristic to Taylor Caldwell. The style seem often naive and overstuffed with details describing the surroundings. Maybe it was the author's intention to be historical, but sometimes it can be too much of that kind of credibility. Definietly recommendable book for both children and adult reading. The catholics will like it, and perhaps many physicians too.

3.0 out of 5 stars Largely, by default, fiction, but nevertheless, entertaining, 15 Dec 2007

First read this many years ago when I was in my teens and thought it was excellent, but know better now in that this book has to be largely fiction; nevertheless it is a GOOD read. Caldwell was an excellent author but did a lot better with her works of pure fiction which are largely very good.
