Product Description

Product Description

This is a recipe-style how-to book that walks users through a wide variety of Dynamic HTML tricks, from page layout techniques through special effects. The internal design and presentation will be almost identical to other Magic books. Step-by-step instructions for each HTML effect will be heavily illustrated. Each will include notes about which browsers support it, and each will offer variations for other creative uses of the effect.

From the Author
The Magic Book, What it is...
DHTML is a new web authoring environment combining several existing technologies into one. This includes JavaScript, HTML, Style Sheets and the Document Object Model. As you can see, DHTML is not content such as, images or text, but a technology framework in which you add YOUR own text and images. DHTML allows you to take your content to places previously unseen on the web before, and at all times the text and images you use are completely up to you. The examples in my book show you the possibilities of using graphics which require far less bandwidth than using traditional HTML methods. Yet the primary point of the book is not to show you images, teach you JavaScript or serve as a boring reference book, but to show you DHTML methods that are not covered in many of the DHTML reference books out there. Methods that allow you to perform cool interface interactions and incredible animations. Methods that engage the user and make them excited about visiting your site. Methods that inspire a web developer to reach into his or her imagination to push the technology even further. These methods are about breaking down your preconceptions of the limits of web development. With DHTML, there are no limits, only your imagination!

5.0 out of 5 stars become a "dhtml expert" by buying this book, 27 Oct 2000
By A Customer
Every DHTML programmer should have this book. The examples would take an experienced javascript and html programmer a long time to research, why make it hard for yourself when the author has created over 20 cross browser dhtml methods for you? Look at the examples, go through the code with a fine toothed comb, rewrite the code, make your own programs and hey presto you are a serious DHTML developer that can hold his own. It is that easy, time and effort are important, but the hardest thing to do is to find the material to learn from and an author to trust. I have Jeff's first DHTML book when he was still learning this new technology along with the rest of us, but he now has DHTML to a fine art and you will too, after studying this book. I have 8 "DHTML" books. This book, the Javascript Bible and the Internet ... are all you will need (Even the Javascript Bible is optional, really for hardcore Javascript programmers only!!! Beginners will get completely lost. Trust me!).

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but badly executed..., 21 Aug 2000
By gareth.noyce@ukonline.co.uk (Southampton, England) - See all my reviews
Jeff Rouyer is without doubt a man that has found a simple technique for cross-browser development and has applied it well to his art. Unfortunately anyone capable of reading (for instance) Netscape's Dev-Center, or some HTML source code, should stay well clear. This book wastes /many/ pages with bad illustrations, and jumbled explanations, ultimately leaving the reader to float through the soure code provided... The art and JavaScript are good (if not great), but are often used as the substance of the book, and to hide the abysmal authoring and explanantions. Jeff uses the technique of badly explaining a routine, then repeating the same badly worded explanantion in every subsequent chapter the code appears in. He seems more adept at trying to beat a bad explanation into your head, than gracefully or elegantly explaining the problem in the first instance. Those seeking more formal, or well explained texts should stay well clear... More interestingly, none of the techniques outlined in this book will be new to people who have been involved in games or multimedia over the last few years. Most of them surfaced on the C64! Path arrays, colour cycling text, keyframe animation and obtuse interfaces are nothing new, no matter how elegant the GFX and HTML code around them... Jeff, you missed a great opportunity.

5.0 out of 5 stars brilliant for DHTML, 1 Jun 2000
By A Customer
BUY THIS BOOK! The book gives real life examples of DHTML along with a cd that contains all the code, along with the various images. This is a fantastic resource for the beginner and intermediate hey and even the "pro"! The animation techniques are brilliant, you even get a path animation tool. Seriously though, you really need to buy this book because it is the best boof i have found for cross browser coding with DHTML, and i own seven up to date DHTML books. Look to get SAMS javaScript in 21 days and Visual Quickstar DHTML and you have all you need to hold your own with the best of them. I read all the reviews before buying, but in this case get your wallet out or tap your mum/dad for this one!
