5.0 out of 5 stars great deck, forget the book, 8 Mar 2004
The five stars are only for the cards, NOT the book. I love the art on this deck, it's some of the best I've seen on rune cards, & I find the cards easy to interpret.

The book on the other hand is typical of the author, whose books I generally dislike, & I agree with the criticism in previous reviews.

I'd recommend buying this set for the cards, & then using the money saved in buying from amazon to buy a decent & more accurate book on how to use runes.

1.0 out of 5 stars Drivel, 7 Oct 2003
By A Customer
As all things "Celtic" have been done to death, Ravenwolf has a stab at something Germanic (although, apparently everything is Norse, like most Americans, she can't tell the difference).

Each chapter starts with a small bit of rather unique (i.e. her interpretation) of Germanic cosmology which is then followed by standard New Age stuff on divination.

She mixes rune names from different Futharks, her interpretation of Germanic beliefs is purely Wiccan and not drawn from genuine lore.

This book is written for a typical Llewllyn audience - people who like to think they are tapping into ancient forms of esoterica but don't want to put the work in, they want it spoonfed to them. Ravenwolf is happy to do that - she's being paid for it - and comforts the "busy" reader who might not have much time to devote to study. "It's okay, I've done all the hard work, I'll share my wisdom with you" There are actually a lot better guides to the runes available for free on the internet IF you are willing to look for them.

Oh, and just one more thing. There is no solid evidence (one debateable mention in Tacitus) for the runes as a tool of divination. That hasn't stopped a continual flow of books on the subject, most of which are as bad as this one.
