5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Cards, easy to read descriptions - a fab guide!, 13 April 2001
I have a more than a couple of books on the art of Tarot reading and I have to say I was very impressed from the outset with this book and deck of cards. The cards are based on an English-Gypsy theme (the author himself is a gypsy half-blood) and are beautifully illustrated by Lisanne Lake. You are first introduced to the cards by a brief outline of gypsy heritage which is to the point and an interesting read. This is followed by the explanations of each cards, as is the norm for most Tarot books however, unlike most of the other Tarot books I have read, Raymond Buckland believes that the most important thing when reading the cards is to get a sense of what you are seeing. He does not therefore spend page after page on long winded descriptions of the precise meanings of each card. He provides a brief synopsis of the "meaning" of each card but then encourages the reader to really look at each card, to see what other things stand out. He uses brief and simple language that is so easy to read, that you almost feel like you are reading a novel. He describes each card with such enthusiasm, it has definitely left me with the confidence to leave all my books behind and really concentrate on what the cards are saying, rather than being bogged down in narrative and worrying about having my normal book to hand so I can give a more "precise" reading. He imparts such an enthusiasm for the cards and the gypsy lifestyle that I find is lacking in many other Tarot and indeed a lot of other divination books.

I would heartily recommend this to anyone interested in the art of Tarot, be they a novice looking for a starting point or an expert looking for a down-to-earth, passionate perspective on tarot reading.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Good insite into Gypsy Life related to Fortune Telling, 30 Nov 2001
By A. Fronteras (Rochester, Kent) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Although there is the assume link between Tarot and gypsies, there is little proof that they used Tarot cards for reading, most evidence points towards them using normal playing card decks. Raymond Buckland suggests that his family which is of Romany heritage had a set of Major Arcana cards but were very different to the standard Major Arcana cards that we know today.

Buckland has combined these heritages to come up with a very useful book at some 238 pages with information on the history and gypsy traditions along with well illustrated set of cards. The cards have an Edwardian feel to them and although well drawn, I felt would have suited better to an older period. A little too modern fro me. The book though is well constructed and a useful insight to the Romany life as well.
