Product Description

Synopsis

Suitable for structured classes or self-paced study, this edition for Release 3.x provides readers with hands-on experience in fundamental to sophisticated ArcView GIS functionality. Early chapters focus on basic tools and functions; later ones highlight advanced analysis and functions in the context of real-world applications. New to this edition are two exercises for the Network and Spatial Analyst extensions and the CD-ROM which accompanies the book contains all files necessary to complete the exercises, including project files, results and data sets from commercial data providers.

From the Publisher

From "AV Extension," vol. 0, no. 3, October 1997:
By Alice Doyle, Vermont Center for Geographic Information.

Although in general [the exercise] build on skills gained in previous
chapters, any of the exercises could readily be used on their
own to learn a particular ArcView functionality. It could be
equally useful as a reference book…Worthwhile Tips, Notes, and
Warnings are also scattered through the book. The prepared
project files on the CD make it very easy to do
the exercises quickly and easily, plus the results are included
on the CD in case you get stuck.

I would highly recommend this book to the ArcView and/or GIS novice.
It seems particularly appropriate for that audience because of the progression
of the material, from overview of ArcView components, to working
with basic functionality, to much more advanced analysis. Each topic
is covered thoroughly for complete understanding of the section, and
the user can move through it at their own pace and schedule.

3.0 out of 5 stars Why this book needs an update., 12 Sep 2002
By Tiago (Lisboa, Lisboa Portugal) - See all my reviews
The book is very good from a beginner point of view. The exercises are simple to understand and straitfoward. The BIG problem in this book is the out-of-date content from the extentions point of view. Spatial Analyst is not updated at all and the 3D Analyst is not mentioned in this book. Nevertheless is a good start.

4.0 out of 5 stars More user-friendly than "Inside ArcView GIS", 26 Nov 1998
By A Customer
The book goes beyond "Getting to know ArcView" and includes the important tools someone needs to begin to take advantage of AV 3.x. I wish the book, or an associated one, would get into the extensions and more powerful uses of the software.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Good, 4 Jul 2002
By A Customer
A very well planned easy to follow book and cd-rom full of exercises to get you acquainted with ArcView GIS. The exercises increase in complexity throughout the book, giving you a comprehensive knowledge of ArcView once you've completed all of the exercises. Suitable for the uniniatiated users of GIS software and those who wish to extend their knowledge of the GIS program. I found it very useful and easy to follow. Written in plain English.

5.0 out of 5 stars I really look forward to reading it-it's unvailable in China
I think many people here want to read it because GIS and Arcview are new for us, however it will be very popular! When can I have the opportunity?
