Product Description

Product Description
Many Microsoft Word users and VBA programmers don't realize the extensive opportunities that exist when Word's Object Model is accessed using Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), which replaced WordBasic in conjunction with the release of Word 97. By creating what is commonly called a "Word Macro" you can automate many features available in Word. Writing Word Macros (previously titled Learning Word Programming is the introduction to Word VBA that allows you to do these things and more, including: Create custom pop-up menus Automatically create tables from lists Append one document to the end (or beginning) of another Create a toggle switch to change a document from draft to final copy by adding or removing a watermark in the header Generate reports using data from other applications Use the spell-checking abilities of Word in your own application Not intended to be an encyclopedia of Word programming, Writing Word Macros provides Word users, as well as programmers who are not familiar with the Word object model with a solid introduction to writing VBA macros and programs. In particular, the book focuses on: The Visual Basic Editor and the Word VBA programming environment. Word features a complete and very powerful integrated development environment for writing, running, testing, and debugging VBA macros. The VBA programming language (which is the same programming language used by Microsoft Excel, Access, and PowerPoint, as well as the retail editions of Visual Basic). The Word object model. Word exposes nearly all of its functionality through its object model, which allows Word to be controlled programmatically using VBA. While the Word object model, with almost 200 objects, is the largest among the Office applications, readers need be familiar with only a handful of objects. Writing Word Macros focuses on these essential objects, but includes a discussion of a great many more objects as well. Writing Word Macros is written in a terse, no-nonsense manner that is characteristic of Steven Roman's straightforward, practical approach. Instead of a slow-paced tutorial with a lot of hand-holding, Roman offers the essential information about Word VBA that you must master to program effectively. This tutorial is reinforced by interesting and useful examples that solve practical programming problems, like generating tables of a particular format, managing shortcut keys, creating fax cover sheets, and reformatting documents. Writing Word Macros is the book you need to dive into the basics of Word VBA programming, enabling you to increase your power and productivity when using Microsoft Word.

From the Publisher
This no-nonsense book delves into VBA programming and tells how you can use VBA to automate all the tedious, repetitive jobs you never thought you could do in Microsoft Word. It takes the reader step-by-step through writing VBA macros and programs.

4.0 out of 5 stars Useful, 19 April 2003
Macros have come a long way from the days when all they would do was re-run keyboard input. Word Basic got dumped after Word 2.0, and got replaced with the far more powerful, and a lot less user friendly VBA. So, if you have struggled with moving over from Word Basic to VBA, then this book will be useful. It covers the essentials of the Word Object Model, and provides examples of some things you might want to do.

I was not overly keen on Roman's style of writing, which seemed to me to be a little condescending, and seemed to be talking down to me. Okay, so I am not VBA WOM expert - that's why I bought the book - but I don't need reminding of the fact! Sometimes Roman refers to me as "you" and sometimes the somewhat grating "we". At times I feel like a stupid kid!

For its shortcomings, this is actually a really useful book. It goes beyond the help files supplied with Word, and it does help open up the subject - something which someone who just wants to get the most out of the word processor might otherwise find a little inaccessible.

It covers the fundamentals of programming in a little under 70 pages in a very clear manner. Some things seem to be missing further in - maybe things which are not within the scope of the book - but I would have liked to be shown how to add a new floating toolbar with custom controls which I have created. The final polish for VBA applications.

And some really important stuff is mentioned almost as an aside such as "referencing a project".

Word Macros are far more than "macros" - and this book goes a long way to help users of Word get the most out of it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction and reference book for VBA Developers, 5 Jan 2001
By M. W. Tymieniecki (London, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I bought the book after starting a VBA project with a beginners guide (Word 97 Macro & VBA Handbook) and getting rather frustrated with the WOB. I found that the book moves fairly quickly through the basics, but then explains the Word Object Model to a greater depth, and more importantly, how to use the key components of the model. This I found particularly useful. The Excel and PowerPoint additions were most helpfull , if a little on the light side (One Chapter). I have found the book to be an invaluable reference for my work, especially the supplied Object Viewer to help in navigating the WOB. I believe that this is a must have for any VBA developer.

5.0 out of 5 stars An essential addition to any Office developers bookshelf, 12 Aug 2000
By steeljam@cix.co.uk (London. England) - See all my reviews
I've been developing applications using Visual Basic for Applications for a few years. I have used the Office VBA Help files and Macro recording to delve into the innards of VBA. This book has provided a great insight to the object model and my understanding has been enhanced. Although it didn't give me all the answers on its pages, it showed where and how I could solve my problems. The information given crosses into Excel and PowerPoint. Good book, well written and certainly value for money.

It continues the excellence found in all the O'Reilly books
