Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
O'Reilly's series of Oracle references rapidly build up into a complete reference that will be at the front of the shelves of any Oracle DBA. However, you've got to start somewhere and Oracle Essentials is meant to be that jumping off point.

Instead of throwing you in at the deep end with a dissertation on data mining, or some obscure section of the Oracle environment, the authors attempt to produce a concise and clear guide to the features of the latest Oracle databases--and how you're likely to want to use them. From an introduction to Oracle's family of tools and technologies, to a look at Oracle on the Web, Oracle Essentials is replete with useful information. It's not just a book that describes the features--you'll also find code samples and plenty of hands-on practical advice. If you're still unclear, the book is packed full of diagrams that show just what the authors are describing.

Oracle Essentials is a distillation of the knowledge of a group of very experienced Oracle engineers and it needs to be on the desk of anyone working with Oracle. With a book this useful, there's really only one question: why do all O'Reilly's Oracle books have bugs on their covers? --Simon Bisson

Product Description
Oracle is an enormous system, with myriad technologies, options, and releases. Most users - even experienced developers and database administrators - find it difficult to get a handle on the full scope of the Oracle system. And as each new version of the database is released, users find themselves under increasing pressure to learn about a whole range of new technologies. This book distills the enormous amount of information about what Oracle is, where it came from, and what the latest releases do -- and packages it into a compact, easy-to-read volume filled with focused text, illustrations and helpful hints. It explains what's new and important about Oracle's revolutionary releases, Oracle8 (the "object-relational database") and Oracle8i (the "Internet database"). It covers: * Oracle products, options, and overall architecture * Installing and running Oracle (creating databases, configuring Net8, starting up and shutting down Oracle) * Oracle data structures * Managing Oracle (implementing security, using the Oracle Enterprise Manager, dealing with fragmentation and reorganization, and performing backup and recovery) * Oracle networking * Monitoring and tuning * Multi-user concurrency and online transaction processing (OLTP) * Special issues for high-availability systems * Hardware architectures (e.g., SMP, MPP, NUMA) and their impact on Oracle * Data warehousing * Distributed databases * Extensions for Oracle8 and Oracle8i, including the latest Java and Web technologies It also includes an appendix full of references to additional online and offline resources. For new Oracle users, DBAs, developers, and managers, Oracle Essentials provides an invaluable, all-in-one introduction to the full range of Oracle features and technologies. But even if you already have a library full of Oracle documentation and books, you'll find that this compact book is the one you turn to, again and again, as your one-stop, truly essential reference. Table of Contents 1. Introducing Oracle 2. Oracle8 Architecture 3. Installing and Running Oracle 4. Data Structures 5. Managing Oracle 6. Oracle8 Performance 7. Multiuser Concurrency 8. Oracle8 and Transaction Processing 9. Oracle8 and Data Warehousing 10. Oracle8 and High Availability 11. Oracle8 and Hardware Architecture 12. Distributed Databases and Distributed Data 13. Oracle8/Oracle8i Extensions 14. Oracle8i and the Web Appendix - Additional Resources

3.0 out of 5 stars Started off well but went off towards the end, 10 Mar 2002
By A Customer
I bought this book in order to get a good overview of what Oracle is all about from a Unix sysadmin point of view. For that it's actually pretty good. The first few chapters went into fair detail about the SGA and what all the processes do. I now know how redo logs work, what segments and extents are etc.
However I thought the latter half of the book was little more than Sales Literature for the Oracle Corporation (which I'm sure they would give me for free wihout me paying for it!)
I also take serious umbrage to the almost total lack of coverage of RMAN.
Nonetheless I got what I wanted out of the first half of the book but couldn't help feeling I could have got so much more out of it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Way to much jargon, 9 May 2001
By A Customer
I wanted to give this zero stars but I didn't have the option. The book is full of jargon, I am very good at SQL but I bought this book wanting to know more about Oracle and it's administration. Take my view I don't buy a book if there is a rating of one star by somebody. The problem here is that you are constantly reading and there are no examples or suggestions that you can do to your own database. OK the book isn't all jargon just 99.9%. This will be my first and last purchase of an O'Reilly book.
