Product Description

Product Description

The Perl/Tk Pocket Reference is a companion volume to Learning Perl/Tk, an O'Reilly Animal Guide. Learning Perl/Tk is a tutorial for Perl/Tk, the extension to Perl for creating graphical user interfaces. With Tk, Perl programs can be window-based rather than command-line based, with buttons, entry fields, listboxes, menus, scrollbars, balloons, tables, dialogs, and more. And Perl/Tk programs run on UNIX and Windows-based computers. This small book is a handy reference guide geared toward the advanced Perl/Tk programmer. Novice Perl/Tk programmers will find that its compact size gives them a global view of Perl/Tk's capabilities; they can then turn to Learning Perl/Tk for details. The Perl/Tk Pocket Reference describes every Perl/Tk graphical element, including general widget and variable information, callbacks, geometry management, bindings, events, and window management, as well as composite widget, font, and image creation and manipulation commands.

About the Author

Steve has developed insurance and accounting systems, device drivers (plotters, digitizers, multiplexors, and Arpanet IMPs), word processors, text editors, and system analysis, performance, and monitoring tools. With decades of computing experience, he provides high-level programming and consulting on applications, network management and configuration, file backup, data migration, user interfaces, and operating systems from vendors such as Apple, CDC, DEC, HP, IBM, Microsoft, and SGI. Steve currently programs and manages Lehigh's large-scale scientific computing complex, and occasionally writes Tk articles for The Perl Journal.

5.0 out of 5 stars Does what it says on the tin ..., 16 Aug 2002
`Mastering Perl/Tk' is a big book, weighing in at over 700 pages, so it's a bit cumbersome if you keep finding yourself thumbing through the pages.

Like all of O'Reilly Pocket References, the Perl/Tk Pocket Reference is small, perfectly formed and contains pretty much all the information you're likely to need.

If you use Perl/Tk a lot, then you shouldn't have to think about whether or not you need to buy this, and it really will fit in your pocket, unlike it's big brother!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Useful as a Quick Reference, 3 Jan 2001
By petergarland@bigfoot.com (West Midlands, England) - See all my reviews
This little pocket guide is very, very useful, as there is soo many parameters to remember, it becomes especially useful.

After reading the Learning Perl/Tk book, this little pocket reference takes over and you'll never have to look at Learning Perl/Tk again.

Great Buy.

3.0 out of 5 stars Better than the main book., 14 Dec 2000
By A Customer
This booklet is a companion to the Learning Perl/Tk book. Being new to Perl and having as my introduction Learning Perl and Programming Perl I anticipated the same high quality from these two books(learning Perl/Tk and Perl/Tk reference) I was saddened by the first but cheered by the second. If you want a guide you are probably best to buy this and read the man pages. I would not waste my money on the bigger book.
