Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
When you get around to planning a Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) routine to get at tables and fields within Microsoft Access, you will run into a major problem: the Access object model has nothing to do with Access data. If you didn't know that, then you'll be delighted with the hundreds of hours Helen Feddema saves you with her well-researched guide through the Data Access Object (DAO) model, where you'll find the components you need. With its ample tables and clear notes, this is a definitive reference that will pay for itself almost the instant you begin applying the invaluable hints, warnings and examples.

Though the book is written primarily from the viewpoint of Access and Excel VBA, it doesn't neglect those using one of the other varieties of VBA or Outlook VB Scripting, or even Windows Scripting Host. The accompanying CD-ROM contains a very useful program, Object Model Browser, which views an object graphically, making it significantly easier to see in context how an object interfaces hierarchically with the Model. All the code examples can also be found on the CD-ROM.

The writing style is crisp and economical yet complete and readily understandable. In tricky places, text is well supplemented with practical examples. Though a fair working knowledge of VBA is required to get the most out of this volume, it can be picked up and used by programmers at any level of experience, and should serve as a useful long-term distillation of what you need to know to personalise Microsoft applications effectively. --Wilf Hey

Product Description
Each iteration of Windows has meant a corresponding improvement in the techniques used for transferring data among its applications. Today's leading technique is called Automation. It allows you to work directly with objects in an application's interface using their object models. But if you want to write code in a programming language, such as Visual Basic, in order to work with the apps that support Automation, you must understand the inner workings of an application's object model--or in the case of Microsoft's Access, its two-object models. Microsoft Access is the bestselling stand-alone relational database program for Windows offering both power and ease of use. And in many respects, Microsoft has made Automation the centerpiece of its vision for application development. DAO Object Model: The Definitive Reference will guide you through the Access object models, allowing you, with the support of Automation, to reference the application components you want to manipulate. An understanding of the object models is essential for developers who work with data in Access tables, or who want to manipulate components of the Access interface from other Office apps. The Data Access Objects (DAO) model is used to write and read data in Access tables. The Access object model is used to manipulate forms, reports, queries, macros, and other components of the Access interface, including most of the commands by means of the DoCmd object. This book includes an introduction and a brief description of the differences between VBA (used in most Office applications) and VBScript (used in Outlook). This chapter will also cover Office utilities and add-ons helpful in writing and debugging code, such as the Object Browser, the Integrated Development Environment (IDE) for VBA and the Interactive Debugger for VBScript. The book will then be divided into two parts; one covering the Access Object Model and the other, the Data Access Objects. Each section will have a description of what the object represents; listings of properties, events, and methods; and one or more code samples illustrating its use in VBA and/or VBScript code. Each property, event, or method section will have an explanation of the language element, and many will have code samples (either VBA or VBScript) as well. The book details, to an advanced user or keen intermediate user, the Access object models and how they are used.

4.0 out of 5 stars DAO Reference with good exposure to Outlook and Access, 12 Dec 2000
By A Customer
This books is an excellent reference source for DAO as used from either Access or other Office 97/2000 applications.

As a reference source it is far more accurate and complete than anything on offer from Microsoft, and as you read along you will be amazed at it's detail, including listing all the anomalies and errors that come packaged with DAO help in Office 97/2000.

But as you work throught it you'll find the programming examples are well chosen to illustrate not only the statement, function or property at hand, but some useful techniques on programming with VBA/vbs/DAO and a kick start on how to take advantage of the interoperability betweent the office applications.

5.0 out of 5 stars Want to know about DAO ? This is "THE BOOK", 21 Sep 2003
By Mr R French (Glasgow, Scotland) - See all my reviews
About a year ago now my development had hit an impass. I need to know more, to do more, and one of the things l identified was DAO. There are many books on Access outhere, some with a chapter or maybe more devoted to DAO. Personally l thought it was some magic black art that was only for those and such as those or at least thats how it seemed to me.

I bought a copy of this book, and to be honest what l can do now still even suprises and delights me. On reading this book the lights suddenly got switched on !! It was as if l suddenly understood what an earth all this recordset and currentdb was all about.

Don't get me wrong this is a reference book as much as anything, which l still use to this day. So much so l'm looking to buy another copy, one for work and one for home. What Helen does do is explains each function or command in a way that you can understand, and makes sense (Microsoft take note !) She even points out where, things are not quite right in the program help (Microsoft take double note !!!!!).

So if your seriously thinking of doing some Access Development, you need this book, on your bookshelf :-D
