Product Description

Product Description
The Tcl language and Tk graphical toolkit are simple and powerful building blocks for custom applications. The Tcl/Tk combination is increasingly popular because it lets you produce sophisticated graphical interfaces with a few easy commands, develop and change scripts quickly, and conveniently tie together existing utilities or programming libraries. One of the attractive features of Tcl/Tk is the wide variety of commands, many offering a wealth of options. Most of the things you'd like to do have been anticipated by the language's creator, John Ousterhout, or one of the developers of Tcl/Tk's many powerful extensions. Thus, you'll find that a command or option probably exists to provide just what you need. And that's why it's valuable to have a quick reference that briefly describes every command and option in the core Tcl/Tk distribution as well as the most popular extensions. Keep this book on your desk as you write scripts, and you'll be able to find almost instantly the particular option you need. Most chapters consist of alphabetical listings. Since Tk and mega-widget packages break down commands by widget, the chapters on these topics are organized by widget along with a section of core commands where appropriate. Contents include:
  • Core Tcl and Tk commands and Tk widgets
  • C interface (prototypes)
  • Expect
  • [incr Tcl] and [incr Tk]
  • Tix
  • TclX
  • BLT
  • Oratcl, SybTcl, and Tclodbc

3.0 out of 5 stars Not for begginers, 15 Dec 2000
By A Customer
Although the book covers a lot of information, begginers will have difficulty finding what they need. For experienced Tcl developers, the book lacks the latest commands and options.

4.0 out of 5 stars A reference not a tutorial, 11 Jun 2007
By A. J. Gauld (Scotland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This, in common with most Nutshell books, is a reference for those who already know Tcl/Tk. Although the basic tutorial at the start might be enough for some, most new Tcl'ers will want to look elsewhere - possibly the excellent online/CBT tutorial. For experienced Tcl'ers this book is a good reference to the most commonly used commands including newer extensions such as [incr Tcl/Tk] and Tix, Expect and data access libraries. I even use it when programming Tkinter in Python as a Tk reference. It could do with an update though so only 4 stars.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointingly out of date, 24 Aug 2007
It's a reasonable reference book for what it covers, but is in sore need of a new edition. Published in 1999 it looks like it is based on Tcl 8.0. The current stable release is 8.4, and even some of the basic commands like lsearch have changed a lot.
