Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Windows 98 ships without its source code, but it's still possible to tweak it to look and behave the way you want. Sometimes you need to poke around and modify the operating system's binary files with a hex editor; sometimes all you need to do is perform some trickery with the interface as it is. Windows 98 Annoyances is for those who refuse to accept Windows 98 at face value.

Author David Karp is clearly a power user, but rather than simply dump reams of technical data upon the reader, he explains how to accomplish specific goals relative to Windows 98's appearance and behaviour. Karp tells how to rig your system to flush its Temp folder (reclaiming disk space formerly used by crashed applications) every time it starts up. He also tells you how to build a text box that acts like a DOS command prompt. Excellent nuggets pack this book, and you can feel sure you'll implement at least a few of them on your machine. A slick suite of custom utilities on this book's companion CD-ROM makes it particularly easy to make modifications.

Windows 98 Annoyances is, ultimately, about hacking Windows 98, never accepting anything as good enough and always looking for a better way to do things. Karp provides excellent guidance to the Windows 98 power user. --David Wall

3.0 out of 5 stars Great idea, could be better presented and indexed, 5 Nov 1999
By A Customer
Full of useful tips to get Windows 98 to do those little things you've always wanted it to do but never thought were possible.

If you buy this book, you will doubtlessly concur with the author's frustration at the Microsoft monstrosity. You may, however, wish that the author spent less time ranting about it and more time offering practical tips and explanations. Wading through the book to find the solution to a particular problem can be tiring, and may not always be fruitful.

Still, I challenge even the most advanced Windows 98 user not to pick up a handful of wisdom pearls from this book.

1.0 out of 5 stars Oh well, 22 Jun 2003

Seduced by the publishing house, I expected this to be an authoritative and wide ranging expose of Windows 98 problems. I found it to be a rambling text, that struggled to flesh out one volume. The author goes to the trouble of filling pages with advice on what height your monitor should be or what speed PC to buy- what a cursor or folder is etc. In other words, general, very basic advice that has nothing or little to do with Win 98 and can be found on scores of websites. I should have heeded the advice of the previous reviewers and maybe should have had a clearer idea of who this book is for. It's for someone who knows very little about PCs who wants to do some advanced stuff, like hex editing! I'm sure there's useful information in here, but it will be difficult to find it and with fierce competition from the web a book needs to have the edge. This one doesn't.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Win98 users, 27 Aug 2009

I got to this book via the Annoyances website and as far as win98 goes it turned out to be a great investment. The Joy of 98 and 98se was the fact that you could tweak and alter settings to suit yourself and this book was an absolute godsend when I purchased it. It gave me the confidence and the knowledge to do things with my operating system that I wouldnt have had the nerve to do even after reading every over priced PC monthly magazine that promised so much and gave so little when you got down to the nitty gritty.

I miss win98 and have only really just got used to XP and now Vista as come along and then of course theres the newest offering from Mr Gates hot off the press! I wish windows would allow an operating system to evolve rather than change every couple of years that way we may get a system that is stable and worthwhile without the need for downloading fixes!
Sorry a little off track but for win98 users, if there are any of you ,this book is a sound one to have on your shelf.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best Win98 books i've read
I found this book invaluable. I bought it half expecting it to be full of the usual garbage found in Windows 98 publications. This one however wasn't so! Read more
