Product Description

Product Description
With Tk, Perl programs can be window-based rather than command-line based, with buttons, entry fields, listboxes, menus, and scrollbars. Originally developed for the Tel language, the Perl port of the Tk toolkit liberates Perl programmers from the world of command-line options, STDIN, and STDOUT, allowing them to build graphical, event-driven applications for both Windows and UNIX. This book is aimed at Perl novices and experts alike. It explains the reasoning behind event driven applications and drills in guidelines on how to best design graphical applications. It teaches how to implement and configure each of the Perl/Tk graphical elements step-by-step. Special attention is given to the geometry managers, which are needed to position each button, menu, label and listbox in the window frame.

About the Author
Nancy Walsh has been involved with Perl (and Perl/Tk) since 1996. She received a Computer Science degree from the University of Arizona in 1993, and currently works as a Principal Consultant for XOR, Inc. doing J2EE and Java work on various projects. Nancy has taught several Perl/Tk Tutorials at the O'Reilly Open Source Conference and is also the author of Learning Perl/Tk.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poorly written, 23 Oct 2001
By A Customer
This book is little more than a reference guide. It contains virtually no examples and often doesn't even explain how to implement some of the methods it teaches you.

Exactly how do you pack widgets into a frame? Chapter 12 is devoted to frames and yet it never once tells you how to pack items into one. It is also clearly wrong to claim that you will use the pack() method 95% of the time if, as is shown in the book, you can't even create a simple columnar output like you can with grid() and place(). I would have thought that any windows containing labels and text entry boxes side by side would have to be in grid format. But then again, as in most other areas of this book, I suspect there is something the author isn't telling us.

What's more amazing is that the book, somewhat perversely, goes into a verbose description of the options for each widget you can create. Why not put this at the end of the book in a table? That's what appendices are for!

By far the best way to learn is by example and on this front, the book fails miserably. What a complete waste of money.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Amusing and Interesting, 3 Jan 2001
By petergarland@bigfoot.com (West Midlands, England) - See all my reviews
When I first got this book, I was really looking forward to reading it, as I have always wanted to put GUI's on top of my Perl Scripts.

The book starts off quite Basic and remains quite basic all the way through the book, but that's just it! Perl/Tk is basic, so this book is a must for people who want to learn Perl/Tk quickly and easily.

The book repeats itself quite a bit, which is good for me, as I have a memory like a fish, but some people might find this annoying.

Generally a good, entertaining and interesting book to read, and I would highly recommend getting the Pocket Reference as well which complements the book quite nicely as a Quick Reference Guide.

2.0 out of 5 stars Wish I hadn't bought it, 16 Aug 2001
This book seems to provide the information derived from a few weeks using the basic bits of Perl/Tk. It would no doubt be of some use to a novice developer, but this book sheds little if any light on how to do the things that you expect to work, but find Perl/Tk doesn't support. The examples are far too limited.
