This book is extremely moving and leaves me feeling like the third party in a menage-a-tois. The intimacy of the letters is astonishing, as is de Beauvoir's loyalty to a relationship which, by her own admission, complicated her life. This book demonstrates how the depth of her feeling for Algren made these complications not just an acceptable trade off, but a cherished part of her emotional existence. I imagine that even a cynic would finish this book with a belief in the strength of love. The only drawback is the absence of Algren's half of the correspondence, which leaves a lot of unanswered questions and an overwhelming curiosity to see his "fat yellow" letters. Perhaps the reader is left with an unbalanced view of Algren's behaviour towards de Beauvoir.You get an idea of the actions of this man but have little or no appreciation of his motivation. I have never read a book which left me wanting to read so many others. An absolute delight.

This book gives a real insight into de Beauvoir's character- after reading these letters, one will never again look upon her as a cold intellectual. If anything, they show that the passion she felt with Algren could not compare to whatever sort of relationship she had with Sartre. Reveals de Beauvoir's true self more than any of her autobiographies.
