I loved this book. Loved it. The stories are word-perfect, haunting, poignant.
It's set in the Cicano community in California and looks at ordinary poor people and their struggle to communicate with each other. It's about loneliness and displacement and it is simply stunningly written. I cried at many passages they were so moving. Don't let the fact that it's sad put you off. The writing is brilliant and the characters stay and stay and stay.
