This is a very funny novel in the postmodern mode. It traces the decline of a bad experimental novelist who takes himself far too seriously, and his involvement with a pair of illiterate, pornography-touting Mexican prostitutes. The parody and pastiche is bang on the mark, with even entire characters lifted from other sources (Daisy Buchanon from 'The Great Gatsby', for example). The self-conscious literary wit of the novel is reminiscent of Flann O'Brien's hilarious 'At Swim-Two-Birds'. This is the sort of novel that, in the wrong hands, could be rather dry and too clever by half - Sorrentino ensures that instead it is warm and funny and enjoyable from start to finish.
