5.0 out of 5 stars A refreshing take on World War 1, 12 April 2009
By Z. Shafiq "z_shafiq" (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Enemy Ace is one of the most unique books I have read in that it tells the story of Baron Von Hammer, who is a World War 1 flying ace fighting for the German side. I have read many war stories that have portrayed the Germans as simply cannon fodder but in this case, our hero is fighting on the side of the 'villains'.
Essentially, Von Hammer is the ultimate gentlemen, who acknowledges his opponents with respect and admiration, even those he kills with ease (he salutes the falling pilot and is likewise saluted in return). After landing, Von Hammer shows genuine distress at his victories but realises he is fighting for his country, even though he dislikes the many congratulations from his comrades.
Battle scenes are vividly coloured and the bullets and explosions seem to jump off the page. I felt that the dialogue could have showed more variation in each chapter ("the sky will eventually take us all" etc etc in each chapter).
Overall, it is essential part of anyone's collection, especially if they are big fans of war comics.
