4.0 out of 5 stars Worth a read, 18 Jun 2001
By e_cleland@yahoo.com (Newry, N.Ireland) - See all my reviews
Gotham's been wiped out by virus', earthquakes, and the US gov. But none of those storylines were well written, so no-one cared. So DC brought in Bob Gale (Writer of back to the Future), Greg Rucka (novellist) and a heap of indie comic artists to create one of the most interesting super hero comics in ages.

This continues on from book 1, and while not quite as good, is still a damn fine read.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Vast Improvement on Volume One, 2 Nov 2007
By Mr. S. W. Steel "stephensteel" (England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is the follow up to Batman: Cataclysm, and No Man's Land volume One.
Gotham is still a ruined mess of a city after the huge earthquake, and now it has been sealed off from the rest of America - no one can go in or out of the city.
I wasn't a huge fan of volume one - it had some real flaws in it. The pace was strange in places, and some storylines from Cataclysm had not been followed through properly. This volume doesn't quite rectify those flaws, but what it does is learn from its predecessors mistakes.
It is paced much better for a start. The storylines in volume one are followed through properly, and there is some real character development in here. There are also more bad guys from the Batman universe. In this volume we get to see the Penguin, a small piece on the Joker, and even Two-Face. The story with commissioner Gordon is also picked up really well, and followed through properly. But for me, the best segment is the part where Batman is captured and drugged and forced to live the death of his parents again. It is really well done, and the artwork in this chapter is superb - it is as though the writers have demanded the best for this part of the book.
Elsewhere the artwork is generally good, but in places i found it quite poor.Batman lookes anorexic in one section - and whilst you could argue that this would happen to him in a city with no supplies, he is still jumping around, fighting etc.... I would have thought that if the writers had wanted to portray Batman as becoming weakened then they should have focussed on that idea, and run with it. He goes from being emaciated and stubbly to clean shaven and really muscular! Go figure!!
But these niggles aside, this is a really good graphic novel - not a stunning page turner, but really enjoyable from the first to the last page.
So, if you have read Cataclysm and No Man's Land volume one then you will be wanting to add this to your collection. If you are new to this storyline - STOP and read those other two volumes as it will not make much sense.

And now, onto Volume Three!
