The True Dark Knight, 24 Aug 2005
Batman: The Dark Knight Archives reprints Batman 1-4. I picked this archive edition up due to the cheap price (£10 at time of writing) and because I recently got back into Batman with "Long Halloween" and "Dark Victory". As with all DC Archive editions this is a hardback book with glossy paper. So how dark is the Dark Knight? I came into this archive expecting some violence but couldn't imagine anything too grim, boy was I wrong. This is an excellent "dark" side of Batman that has not been shown in recent Bat stories. The reader gets to see Batman hang, stab and even machine gun (from the Batplane) villains. Cops see Batman as a vigilante. I cant recommend the book for younger children, but teens and above should be ok. The stories are easy to read and maybe a little too...easy for todays readers, although they contain more speech bubbles than most of todays comics. Batman tackles the classic villains such as Joker and Catwoman, but also silly enemies like giant men and "Crime Master". So what's the art like? Well, there is no splash pages, no dynamic poses and the style is simplistic. However, it suits the stories and keeps the story following. The colouring is kinda gritty but once again it suits the story and the comics are 65 years old (1940-2005)! The best part of the whole archive for me was Catwoman. She's simply referred to as "The Cat" and although she gets into a "damsel in distress" moment, she still has her Catwoman flare. Greatest line was (while Batman is wrestling Catwoman) "Papa spank", yeah its kinda sexist but hearing Batman say that to Catwoman just had be laughing!
