3.0 out of 5 stars Another well illustrated overview typical of these publishers., 6 Aug 2007

This review is from: Pearl Harbor (Hardcover)
On 7 December 1941 the very words "Pearl Harbor" ceased to mean a US naval base in Hawaii. From that date and forevermore those two words came to symbolise an act of aggression by one country upon another without "War" having been formally declared by the aggressor. It was an event the world had not previously seen. Indeed, such is the symbolic importance of those two words that when, some 60 years later, two aircraft were deliberately flown into the World Trade Centre buildings in New York, that act was called "The New Pearl Harbor."

Much has been written about those events in Hawaii in 1941 and it is fair to say that this book brings nothing new to the table of knowledge and understanding of what happened on that beautiful Sunday morning. This book will, therefore, be dismissed by those with considerable knowledge of the subject as a mere overview. Nevertheless, British historian and writer Hedley Willmott provides those who are new to the subject with an excellent appraisal of events - before during and after the infamous attack itself.

So, if you know little or nothing about that specific day over 65 years ago - which the American President described at the time as "A day which will live in infamy," then this is just about as good a starting place as any. Especially so because of the excellent collection of photographs in addition to a very readable text.
