Amazon.co.uk Review

This update to Lynda Weinman's highly successful Designing Web Graphics series addresses the new technologies related to Web site design, such as dynamic HTML (DHTML), the Portable Network Graphics (PNG) format, and standardised red-green-blue (SRGB). It also discusses the new software programs that help you create and optimise Web graphics, such as Adobe Image Ready and Macromedia Fireworks. Weinman also deals with the old favourites, such as Photoshop and Paintshop Pro, and continues to focus on creating good-looking, compact graphics, as opposed to writing HTML, say, or setting up a server.

Weinman helps you develop your career in the area of Web graphics by setting goals, building a portfolio and making your work and talent known. She helps you optimise graphics and work with the best file formats and colour palettes for your purpose. You'll learn colour-related concepts such as spectrum, hue and saturation; choose effective colour schemes; create links, buttons, image maps, tables, frames, animated GIFs and JavaScript rollovers; work with type and DHTML; fine- tune HTML to alter text, tables, links and more; and work with plug-ins and QuickTime 3.0.

The book has many large, useful illustrations and screen shots and the text is simple, straightforward and geared successfully for relative newcomers. --Kathleen Caster

3.0 out of 5 stars You already know 70 percent..., 24 Jun 1999
By A Customer
If you (have to) make pages for a living, chances are you already know 70 percent. Designing Web Graphics 3 focuses too much on HTML, but fails to do that thoroughly. I understand why it's in there, but I don't need tutorials on frames and tables. Buy this [expensive!] book for the other 30% you might not know..

5.0 out of 5 stars Hard to beat this jumpstart book!, 14 Jun 1999
By A Customer
I bought this book to use as a reference to some projects that I was working on and it has proven to be a great book. I have picked it up a number of times since I first read it. This book will continueally guide you to better web graphic design. It is a very fast read and it's concepts are clear and precise. There are a few typos, but none serious enough to effect the value of this book. If you are looking to combine your web graphics into other forms of web media this book includes some of the simple steps to create flash movies and director objects. I would recommend this book to anyone wishing to get a better understanding of how web graphics work.

1.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Design, Horrendous Editing, 25 Jul 1999
By A Customer
Weinmann is a reknowned expert in her field, but you wouldn't know it from this book. The text is replete with sloppy mistakes -- from annoying typos and miscaptioned images to plain, old wrong information, including even basic HTML syntax. The book reads like a term paper that was written in an "all nighter" without a second look. Did Weinmann not have an editor for this title?

The problem with this book is that if you're a beginner, you're likely to be confused by the numerous errors. On the other hand, if you already know enough web design to spot the errors, then there's not much new to be learned from this volume --certainly not enough to justify its hefty price tag.

In short, this is a nice book to lay out on your coffee table, but not one to rely on for solid design strategies.
